WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The W&M men's gymnastics team opened its season with a 379.95-306.65 victory against the defending national champions, Stanford, in a virtual meet at Williamsburg Gymnastics on Wednesday afternoon.
 
"We're super excited about having the opportunity to compete despite pandemic conditions," W&M Director of Gymnastics Mike Powell said. "The virtual platform, Virtius, provided an excellent experience where the guys could have a great day of competition. They guys went out and did their job. We're thrilled with how they did. We have much respect and thanks for Stanford for competing even under tough pandemic conditions."  
 
Stanford competed with a limited roster and had just four scorers in four of the final five rotations.
 
Christian Marsh highlighted the Tribe's individual efforts by winning event titles on pommel horse (13.35, career high) and rings (12.9), while Andrew Lyubovsky posted the meet's top score on high bar (13.2).
 
In addition to being W&M's first ever virtual meet, the competition marked the first time in NCAA Division I men's gymnastics history that all four judges were women.

Event Recaps
Floor, 62.75 – Cutter Fugett led the Tribe on floor and placed second with a 13.35.
 
Pommel Horse, 61.95 – Marsh won the pommel horse title with a career-high 13.35, while Christian Gulotta tied for second with a 12.7.

Rings, 61.2 – Marsh posted the meet's top score on rings with a winning mark of 12.9, while Zane Petras also came up big and tied for third with a 12.7.
  
Vault, 68.05 – Aidan Cuy and Collin Lillie were W&M's top two scorers on vault and recorded a 13.8 and 13.7, respectively.

Parallel Bars, 62.95 – Lyubovsky placed second on parallel bars with a 13.3, while Cuy also earned a top-three finish with a 12.9.

High Bar, 63.05 – Lyubovsky won the high bar title with a 13.2, and freshman Sam Lee made a memorable collegiate debut by placing third (13.05).
 
All-Around  – Competing in all-around for the first time in his career, Cuy placed second with a 74.25. Lyubovsky also competed in all six events and placed third (71.150).
 
Next Up
W&M will return to action when it hosts Navy at Kaplan Arena on Feb. 21. The event will be part of a double dual with the Tribe women's team, as it will host Towson.
