WILMINGTON, N.C. - William & Mary volleyball suffered a 3-1 setback at UNCW on Saturday afternoon.
Lauren Merrill led the Tribe with a double-double on 17 kills and 15 digs, while
Maddie Meyers added 10 kills and 11 digs.
Amy Schwem tallied 38 assists, five kills and eight digs, and
Anna Porter finished in 29 digs.
The Tribe (4-14, 1-12 CAA) jumped out to a set advantage taking the opener by hitting .333 as a team to go with 13 kills. W&M opened up a five-point cushion, 19-14 behind three-straight points on a Meyers kill, a Schwem ace and a block by
Kaitlyn Ferguson and
Sabrina Malcolm.
Another service ace, this one from
Anne Louise Seekford opened up a 22-16 W&M lead. UNCW (4-20, 3-10 CAA) closed to 22-20 with four-straight points, but a Schwem kill closed out the set for the Tribe, 25-21.
UNCW responded by hitting .310 with 16 kills in the second set to pull even behind a 25-20 win. In a back-and-forth third set, UNCW won six of the final seven points to take a 2-1 lead. The Seahawks hit .355 as a team in the third set.
In the final set, W&M jumped out to a 12-7 lead and was up 22-17 before the Seahawks won the final eight points to pull out the set and the match, 25-22. UNCW picked up half its points during the run on blocks, including the match-winner by Katie Lanz and Brooke Hanshumake.
The Tribe returns to action when it takes on the Seahawks on Sunday at 1 p.m. The match will be streamed on FloVolleyball.
