WILLIAMSBURG, VA.- William & Mary volleyball fell in four sets to the College of Charleston Sunday afternoon in Kaplan Arena. The Tribe used a late 8-1 scoring run to win the second set, but could not overcome mistakes hitting just .184 in the match.
Claire Farrell had her best effort of 2021 in the loss knocking down a season-high 10 kills and nine digs to go with a solo block.
Julia Brown also had 10 point-enders and hit .280 on the afternoon and had four total blocks.
Sabrina Malcolm was the Tribe's most efficient player with eight kills and just one error for a .412 percentage.
Amy Shwem and
Kate Van Houten dished out 26 and 16 assists respectively and
Anna Porter led the way defensively with a game high 14 digs.
Maddie Meyers and
Anne Louise Seekford each contributed eight kills while
Sydney Taylor had five kills and six digs.
Charleston jumped out on the Tribe taking the opening set 25-15 behind a seven point run late in the frame. In the opening set, Meyers and Brown each had three kills while
Anna Porter added a service ace.
Amy Schwem got off to a hot start with eight assists in the opener to go with a pair of digs.
The second set saw Charleston take a 17-11 advantage over the Tribe and later a 19-17 lead, but coach Doyle's team fought back taking eight of the final nine points in the game to secure a 25-20 win. Brown was unstoppable in the set with five kills and zero errors and Porter delivered five digs. Schwem and Van Houten each had four assists and the Tribe's defense held Charleston to .122 hitting in the win.
In the third frame, Farrell was the offense for the Tribe killing six balls on seven tries and Seekford and Meyers chipped in three kills as Schwem had a tremendous 10 assist effort. However, the Cougars were able to out-hit the Tribe .400 to .355 taking the third set 25-20.
Charleston jumped all over the Tribe in set four racing out to a 10-3 advantage. Despite four more kills from Seekford and six digs from Porter the Green and Gold could not claw back into the frame as the Cougars took a 25-17 fourth set for the match victory.
