WILLIAMSBURG, VA.- Despite recording more kills, blocks, and digs, William & Mary fell in three extremely close sets to preseason CAA-favorite Towson Saturday night in Kaplan Arena. The Tribe held one of the best offensive teams in the CAA to just .186 hitting in the match and had leads in all three sets.
A trio of Tribe veterans had standout matches as
Julia Brown led all hitters with 14 kills and a .542 hitting percentage.
Kate Van Houten dished out a season-high 33 assists and added four digs and a trio of kills, while
Anna Porter grabbed a game-high 16 digs in just three sets.
In the opening Frame the Tribe held Towson to just nine kills as
Anne Louise Seekford recorded a pair of blocks and Brown and
Sabrina Malcolm would each add one. Brown and Malcolm accounted for eight of the Tribe's 12 kills in the frame and Porter started off hot with seven digs. However, service errors bit the Tribe in a 25-20 Towson win.
In the second stanza, Brown was at it again with six kills and zero errors to go with a pair of blocks.
Lauren Merrill chipped in four kills and
Maddie Meyers had five of her nine digs in a see-sawing battle that saw the Tigers prevail 27-25. The Tribe offense clicked in the frame hitting .302 with 17 kills and just four errors
The final frame saw the Tribe once again put up a solid stat line but fall 25-23. The Green and Gold held towson to a lowly .032 hitting percentage led by five more digs from Porter and a pair of Malcolm Blocks. Brown and Merrill touched up Towson for three kills each, but five service aces from the Tigers would give the visiting the late push needed to come out on top.
UP NEXT: The Green and Gold will be at Kaplan Arena for the final two home matches of the season next Saturday and Sunday. The Tribe will face off with CAA-leading Elon and celebrate Senior Day prior to the Sunday afternoon tilt.
