HEMPSTEAD, N.Y.- On the day of her 100th career match,
Julia Brown led all Tribe attackers with 14 kills but it was in a losing effort as Hofstra defeated William & Mary in three sets Sunday afternoon. Brown had a pair of blocks and a .360 hitting percentage in the match.
Senior
Lauren Merrill also hit .360 on the afternoon and was dynamic, killing 13 balls.
Amy Schwem was outstanding, dishing out 37 assists in the three-set match and
Anna Porter led the Tribe with 11 digs.
Despite a stellar first set from Brown, the Pride would take the opening set of the match 25-20. In the opening frame, Hofstra jumped on the Tribe winning 10 of the first 13 points of the match. William & Mary would cut into the lead and a pair of aces from
Anna Porter made it a 23-20 game but Hofstra earned the final two points of the set to gain a 1-0 lead in the match.
Once again the Tribe was in an early hole as Hofstra took the first five points of the second stanza. The Tribe would cut into the lead making it an 18-16 Hofstra advantage but the Pride won eight of the next 10 points on the way to a 25-18 win. The Green and Gold got five digs from Porter but was unable to slow down a Hofstra offense that hit .289 in the set.
In the third it was the Tribe getting out to the hot start racing out to an 8-5 advantage. William & Mary held a lead for the majority of the set before Hofstra battled to tie the game at 19-19. Merril delivered eight of the Tribe's 19 kills in the frame but it would not be enough as Hofstra took a 25-23 win to clinch the match.
Anne Louise Seekford had another strong performance adding seven digs and five kills while
Maddie Meyers had eight kills, six digs, and a pair of blocks.
