WILLIAMSBURG, VA.- Carlos Garrido slapped a pair of hits, scored twice, and drove in two as the Tribe (8-8) won its fourth straight ballgame and swept Merrimack Sunday afternoon 8-3 at Plumeri Park. Starter
Jack Cone went six strong innings allowing just one run and striking out five to earn his third straight win.
After a scoreless inning and a half,
Brandon Raquet opened the Tribe half of the second inning with a triple to deep left-center.
Hunter Hart would knock in Raquet with an RBI grounder to short.
The Tribe would three walks and a pair of hits, including a two-run single from
Cole Ragone to score three times in the fourth to extend the lead to 4-0. Merrimack would get a run back in the top of the fifth cutting the lead to 4-1.
Cone would settle in and retire the Warriors quietly in the sixth with the help of a
David Hogarth diving catch. In the bottom of the sixth Trehub and Ragone would walk to lead off and score on a double laced to left-center by
Carlos Garrido. After a single from Hogarth, Garrido would score on a sac fly off the bat of
Ben Williamson to make it 7-1.
Matt Howat would set the Warriors down in order in the seventh, but Merrimack would score a pair of runs in the eighth to cut the Tribe lead to four. The Tribe would get a run back in the bottom half of the inning as Garrido singled and moved to third on a
Ben Williamson double. Garrido would later score on
Matt McDermott's deep sac fly to center.
Randy Prosperi would work a perfect ninth inning to secure the 8-3 win for the Tribe. W&M will have an off day Monday before traveling to Blacksburg for a midweek date with Virginia Tech on Tuesday afternoon.
NOTES
The Tribe forced a 4-6-3 double play in the first inning and a highlight reel 9-6 double play in the sixth. They were the team's 17th and 18th twin-killings of the season, tied for first in the NCAA.
Brandon Raquet led off the second with his fourth triple of the season, the team's 11th. Both lead the NCAA.
Hunter Hart's RBI in the second inning was his team-leading 16th RBI of the year.
The game was
Carlos Garrido's second multi-hit and multi-RBI game and his first time scoring at least two runs.
With the win, the Tribe has gotten a victory in four straight ballgames and swept the first two home weekend series.
The Tribe improved to 8-2 on the season at Plumeri Park.
