One sport at William & Mary that perennially has athletes in the running for National Athlete of the Year is men's gymnastics, and Sebronzik Wright was one of the very first to enter that august company for the Tribe.
Wright was a record-setter for W&M across a number of events, but it was the vault where he made his mark on the national scene. As a senior in 1995, he flew to a runner-up finish at the NCAA Championships and All-American honors, after placing 12th the year before and 14th in 1993. At the time, it was the best finish ever for a Tribe men's gymnast at the national meet, and it is still tied for the third-best showing ever behind only a pair of national titles. Wright was also a finalist for the Nissen-Emery Award in 1995, the "Heisman" of college gymnastics that acknowledges not just athletic achievement, but also good sportsmanship, fair play, and academic achievement. Wright was just the second W&M gymnast to be named a finalist for the award, and is still one of just nine men to earn that honor.
He was not just a gymnast who only turned it on for the biggest meets. Wright also led W&M to the USA Gymnastics National Championship team titles in 1994 and 1995, a meet that is limited to teams under a certain funding threshold to prevent it from being just another version of the NCAA meet. Individually, he earned five USAG All-American honors, including national titles in the vault each year and the parallel bars as well in 1994. At the conference level, Wright's teams won the ECAC Championship in 1992 and 1994, and after he graduated, it would be another 12 years before the Tribe won again. Individually, he won five conference championships with at least one every year, and had 12 all-conference performances in total. His wins included the vault in 1992, 1994, and 1995, and the floor exercise in both 1993 and 1995. Wright was also successful at the Virginia State Championships, winning 10 titles in his four years. He won the vault all four years, as well as the parallel bars three times, the pommel horse twice, and the floor exercise as a senior in 1995.
Overall, Wright graduated as the school record holder in the floor exercise, the vault, and the pommel horse, while also ranking second on the parallel bars and seventh in the all-around. That scoring system lasted until being changed by the international gymnastics governing bodies in 2008, and at that time, he still held at least a share of the records in the floor, vault, and pommel horse and tied for fifth in the parallel bars. After the end of his senior year, he was chosen as the Tribe Club Senior Athlete of the Year.
