WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Fresh off a Tuesday night win, William & Mary men's soccer travels to Colonial Athletic Association foe Charleston on Saturday. It will be the first of two-straight in the Palmetto State for the Green and Gold. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. from Patriots Point Athletics Complex in Mt. Pleasant.
Scouting the Tribe
- The Tribe picked up its first win of the year, downing Patriot League favorite Loyola Maryland, 2-0, on Tuesday night. W&M sits at 1-4-2 on the year.
- The Tribe scored twice over an eight-minute, second-half span to pick up the victory. Senior
Julian Ngoh scored for the second time in three matches, while freshman
Diba Nwegbo picked up his first marker.
- Freshman
Nathan Messer, who made his first collegiate start on Tuesday, picked up his first point with the Tribe with an assist on Ngoh's game-winner. Sophomore Derin Kokuulsu also recorded his first career points with an assist off a free kick on the Tribe's second goal.
- The Tribe is 0-1-1 in the CAA standings after a 1-1 draw in the CAA opener with UNCW and a 2-1 setback at Drexel last Saturday.
- Freshman goalkeeper
Kieran Baskett earned a pair of honors for his performance in the Tribe's 1-1 draws with then-No. 24-ranked NC State and UNCW. He was named the CAA Defensive Player of the Week and selected to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week. Baskett notched seven saves against the Wolpack and 11 stops against the Seahawks.
- Baskett's 11 saves against the Seahawks were the most for a W&M player since 1998 when Adin Brown tallied 12 against St. John's. The total was the most in a CAA game since 2015 and the eighth-most in the country this season.
- Freshman
Alexander Levengood ranks fourth in the CAA with three goals and seventh in points. He tallied goals at High Point, against UNCW and at Drexel.
- Ngoh is tied for Levengood for the team lead in points with six on two goals and two assists. He is tied for the CAA lead in assists, while rankings seventh in points.
- Each of the last five games, the Tribe started five freshmen. It marks the first time five rookies started for W&M since 2015. In total, six true freshmen (
Marcos Villeda,
Alfredo Bozalongo, Nwegbo, Messer, Baskett and Levengood) have started at least one game this season. It marks the most true freshmen to start games in a season since 2011.
- Baskett leads the CAA in saves (33) while ranking second in save percentage (.750) and saves per game (4.71) and eighth in goals against average (1.48). His save total ranks 21st nationally.
- Junior
Sam Golan, who was an All-CAA third-team selection in 2018, and freshman
Alfredo Bozalongo have been the Tribe's ironmen so far in 2019. They are the only two W&M field players to play all 670 minutes.
- In total, 54.5 percent of the Tribe's starts this season (42-of-77) have come from its underclassmen – freshmen and sophomores. The rookies own 32 of those starts.
Scouting Charleston
- Charleston sits at 1-6-1 on the year following a 3-2 double overtime loss at Winthrop on Wednesday night. The Cougars are 0-2 in CAA play with setbacks to Hofstra, 3-0, at home and at Northeastern, 4-2.
- Prior to the match with the Tribe, Charleston will honor long-time head coach Ralph Lundy to recognize and honor his service and commitment to the institution. CofC will dedicate the field at Patriots Point Athletic Complex in Lundy's honor. He is retiring at the end of the season after 33 years on the sidelines, including 452 victories.
- CofC twice rallied from a goal deficit with markers in the 36th minute from Cole Guledge and in the 68th minute from Rio Murray, but the Eagles pulled out the victory with the winner in the 103rd minute.
- Mads Myllerup tallied a pair of assists in the loss to Winthrop and leads the Cougars with two on the year.
- Both Tucker Heffron and Jake Nicholson top Charleston with two goals apiece. Heffron scored the game-winner in the Cougars' win over Presbyterian.
- Isaac Alstrom has played every minute in goal for CofC and sports a goals against average of 2.38 to go with 24 saves. He notched back-to-back shutouts in the win over Presbyterian and the draw with Radford.
Series History: W&M vs. Charleston
- W&M holds a 10-2-2 advantage in the all-time series with the Cougars, including a 3-2-2 mark in Charleston. Since the Cougars joined the CAA in 2013, the Tribe is 4-1-1 against CofC.
- The Green and Gold has outscored Charleston, 31-18, over their 14 meetings.
- Last season, W&M dominated CofC, 4-1, in Williamsburg to clinch a spot in the CAA Tournament. The Tribe scored the game's first four goals, including markers from
Tanner Shane and
Reeves Trott.
- The last meeting in Charleston, the Tribe and Cougars played to a 1-1 draw with each scoring in the second half.
