Matt McDermott's Walk-Off Double Clinches Series Win over Charleston

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Sophomore Matt McDermott roped a double into the left-field corner to propel the William & Mary baseball team to a 4-3 walk-off win over the College of Charleston on Saturday afternoon at Plumeri Park. The victory secured the series for the Tribe who won their longest game of the season in 13 innings.

Junior Brandon Raquet singled to right and moved up 90-feet on an error. After an intentional walk to Owen Socher, McDermott drove home Raquet with the double to left field. It was McDermott's eighth multi-RBI game of the year.

W&M (27-19, 9-11 CAA) scored single runs in the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead over the visiting Cougars. Seniors Jason Waldman and Kyle Wrighte provided RBI singles in the first and third innings, while a McDermott squeeze bunt plated Wrighte in the second.

Charleston (28-18, 10-7 CAA) scored an unearned run in the seventh and with two outs in the ninth, Joey Mundy launched a pinch-hit, two-run home run to right field to tie the game at three. One batter earlier, pinch-hitter Luke Stageberg struck out swinging on what would have been the third out of the ninth, but he reached on a wild pitch as the ball bounced away from the catcher.

Senior left-hander Bodie Sheehan got the no-decision despite a strong seven innings of work. He allowed an unearned run on three hits and a walk while striking out five. Junior Chris Farrell pitched the final 4.1 innings for the Green and Gold to pick up his fourth win of the season. He struck out five batters and did not allow a hit while walking three. Nathan Ocker took the loss for the Cougars, allowing the game-winning run over 3.1 innings with three strikeouts.

How It Happened
- With two outs in the first inning, senior Zach Pearson tripled to the right-center field gap. Senior Hunter Smith and junior Matthew Trehub walked on a total of nine pitches to load the bases. Waldman gave W&M a 1-0 lead driving home Pearson with a chopper over the mound for an infield single.
- The first two runners reached to start the second inning. Wrighte was hit by a pitch and moved around to third on a Raquet single to left field. The Tribe used a squeeze play as McDermott laid a perfect bunt down the first-base line to plate Wrighte and increase the Tribe lead to 2-0.
- W&M used a two-out rally in the third to push across another run. Waldman walked and moved up 90-feet on a Jack Cone single up the middle. Facing a full count, Wrighte delivered a single to almost the same spot to make it 3-0.
- The Tribe defense turned in nice plays in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to continue to put up zeros on the visitor's side of the scoreboard. Sheehan started a 1-4-3 double play in the fourth, fielding a comebacker off the bat of Chaz Davey. In both the fifth and sixth innings, Raquet made a nice running catches in left field.
- Charleston scored a run in the seventh thanks to a pair of Tribe miscues. Danny Wondrack reached to start the inning on an error and came around to score on a throwing error as W&M tried to turn two in the middle of the infield. W&M escaped any more damage as Wrighte made a nice grab of a soft liner off the bat of Jared Kirven in short left field.
- With two out in the ninth, Mundy delivered a pinch-hit, two-run home run to right field. Stageberg, who pinch-hit a batter earlier, reached on a wild pitch after a swinging third strike. Mundy launched a 1-1 pitch over the right field wall to tie the game at three.
- The Cougars threatened in the top of the 13th with runners on first and second and just one out. McDermott fielded a hot shot up the middle by Wondrack, stepped on the bag and fired to first for the inning-ending double play.
- In the home half of the 13th, Raquet singled to right field with one out and moved up to second on an error by the right fielder. After an intentional pass to senior Owen Socher, McDermott proved the walk-off double to bring home Raquet for the game-winning run. Ahead in the count, the sophomore second baseman ripped a 2-0 pitch into the left-field corner for the winner.
