ARLINGTON, Va. – The William & Mary baseball team dropped an 8-4 road decision at George Washington on Wednesday afternoon. The Colonials (20-13) scored three runs in the first and fifth innings to pick up the victory.
George Washington scored three runs in the opening frame thanks in large part to a two-run double from Dom D'Alessandro. W&M (20-12) answered in the second via junior
Brandon Raquet's two-run home run.
After a solo home run in the fourth, the Colonials loaded the bases in the fifth and pushed across three runs on a hit by pitch, single and a walk to increase its lead to 7-2.
The Tribe rallied late by loading the bases with one out in the ninth inning. Sophomore
Matt McDermott worked an RBI walk to bring the tying run to the plate. Unfortunately, George Washington's Kevin Sylvestri retired the final two Tribe batters on nine pitches to preserve the home team's victory.
How It Happened
- George Washington struck first on a D'Alessandro two-run double into the left-field corner. He came around to score on Tyler Hix's single up the middle and the Colonials led 3-0 after one inning.
- Raquet cut the Tribe deficit to one with a two-run blast in the top of the second. After junior
Matthew Trehub singled to start the inning, the junior left fielder deposited a Jaret Edwards offering over the left-center field fence to cut the gap to 3-2.
- Anthony Frechette increased the GW lead to 4-2 with a solo home run, the first of his career, in the bottom of the fourth inning.
- George Washington sent nine to the plate in the fifth inning to tack on three more runs. Hix on a hit by pitch, Derek Ripp with a single and Logan Doran on a walk drove in runs with the bases loaded.
- Senior
Zach Pearson brought home a run for W&M in the sixth inning thanks to a two-out double to left field. Classmate
Owen Socher walked with one out and scored on Pearson's extra-base hit.
- The Colonials again loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh and pushed across a run via a balk. D'Alessandro led off the inning with a walk and came around to score on a
Jamie Sara balk with one out.
- The Tribe loaded the bases with just one out in the top of the ninth on a Pearson single and walks from Trehub and freshman
Hunter Hart. Sophomore
Matt McDermott worked an impressive at-bat, fouling off numerous pitches before drawing a walk to bring home Pearson and pull W&M within 8-4.
- The Green and Gold twice brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but George Washington's Kevin Sylvestri shut the door. He forced pinch-hitter
Matt Thomas into a fly out to center field and then struck out
Jack Cone to record the save.
