WILMINGTON, N.C. – The William & Mary baseball team held off a late UNCW comeback attempt to complete a three-game sweep, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon. The Tribe (19-7, 4-2) pitching staff continued to shine after shutting out the Seahawks (15-14, 3-3) for seven-straight innings to improve its win streak to four in a row.
W&M grabbed an initial lead after plating three runs across the first four innings. The Tribe scored its first run in the top of the second. Freshman
Hunter Hart hit a one-out single through the right side, before making it home on a pair UNCW errors.
W&M scored two more unearned runs in the fourth inning. Two free bases and a single through the right side from rookie
Jack Cone loaded the bases. A dropped fly in left field then allowed the Green and Gold to take a 3-0 advantage.
However, the Seahawks cut it to a one-run game in eighth to end the shutout bid. Back-to-back singles and a two-out walk loaded the bases for UNCW. Kep Brown hit an RBI single and a throwing error on the play scored the second run for a 3-2 margin.
The Tribe was unable to add any insurance runs in the top of the ninth and had to rely on its defense to sweep the weekend. Junior
Chris Farrell was called upon to close out the contest. Farrell struck out the first two batters before surrendering a pair of free bases. Nonetheless, he made the next batter whiff to halt the UNCW rally.
Freshman
Zach Tsakounis (4-0) delivered six shutout innings to garner the win. Gage Herring (0-2) was dealt the loss after lasting 3.2 innings with three runs (all unearned) and two hits. Farrell was rewarded with the save as he retired the Seahawks on strikes in the final frame.
