Nathan Knight Named to Oscar Robertson Trophy Watch List

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – William & Mary senior Nathan Knight added another national player of the year watch list to his resume on Thursday. The 6-10 center was one of 46 players named to the Oscar Robertson Trophy Watch List presented by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association.

The list included just 17 players from outside the Power 5 conferences, and Knight was one of only two Colonial Athletic Association players, along with Northeastern's Jordan Roland, to be recognized. Earlier this season, the Tribe bigman was named to the watch lists for both the Lute Olson National Player of the Year Award and the Lou Henson Mid-Major Player of the Year Award, presented by CollegeInsider.com. For the second-straight year, Knight was one of 20 players nationally named to the preseason watch list for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year award after being one of five finalists in 2019.

Since its founding in 1956, the USBWA has named a national player of the year. In the 1997-98 season, the award was named in honor of the legendary Oscar Robertson, "The Big O." In addition, the USBWA selects an All-America team and All-District teams, players and coaches of the year.

The 2019-20 Oscar Robertson Trophy will be presented at the NCAA Final Four in Atlanta in April. The winner will be also be honored at the annual USBWA Awards Luncheon at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis on Mon., April 13, 2020. The association's Henry Iba Award (national coach of the year) and Wayman Tisdale Award (national freshman player of the year) winners will also be honored at the luncheon as well as the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award and the Tamika Catchings Award, honoring the women's national and freshman players of the year.

While all Division I players are eligible for the Oscar Robertson Trophy, the USBWA board has chosen the players on the watch list to promote the award and give the membership, which votes on all USBWA awards, an early look at some of the best players in the country. In January, the USBWA will release a second watch list, followed by finalists after All-America balloting is complete in March. Last season, Duke's Zion Williamson was the recipient of both the Oscar Robertson Trophy and the Wayman Tisdale Award.

The USBWA formally expanded its All-America team to 15 players in 2019 and many of the players on this watch list will contend for All-America honors. In addition, the USBWA continues to name an Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week each Tuesday.

Knight has enjoyed an exceptional start to the 2019-20 season, averaging 20.3 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. He leads the country with seven double-doubles and is one of only two players nationally averaging 20 points and 10 rebounds per game. He has tallied double-doubles in each of his last three games and recorded a pair of 30-point scoring performances to bring his school-record total to 11. Last week, Knight was named the CAA Player of the Week for the fourth time in his career after averaging 29 points and 11 rebounds in games with Morehead State and Buffalo.

Knight and the 6-3 Tribe return to action traveling to Fairfield on Sunday, Dec. 8, at 2 p.m.  The game will be streamed on ESPN+. Tribe fans can catch the men's basketball action over the William & Mary Sports Network with Jay Colley on the call. The Tide 92.3 FM and 107.9 Bach FM are the flagship stations and the audio is also available over the Web via the Tune-In app.
