After a strong week at the West Virginia Invitational, William & Mary senior
Colin Wright (Williamsburg, Va.) was again named the Colonial Athletic Association Men's Swimmer of the Week on Tuesday. It is the fourth award of the season for W&M in six weeks of competition, and the second of the year for Wright as well as the fifth of his career.
Wright turned in a number of notable performances in Morgantown, including two firsts, two seconds, two NCAA qualifying swims, a lifetime-best, and swimming on all five of the Tribe's top relays. He started the meet with an NCAA B-cut and conference-leading time of 19.92 seconds in the prelims of 50 free. That evening, he led-off the Tribe's 200 free relay to a win in 1:19.75, then finished second overall in the finals of the 50 at 20.0 seconds. He also swam anchor on the 400 medley relay that finished second overall in 3:15.40. Friday, Wright eschewed his normal 200 free spot to swim both the 100 fly and the 100 breast, timing a lifetime-best 58.11 in the prelims of that event. Friday evening's finals saw him take anchor the 200 medley relay to second overall in 1:27.43, the second-fastest time in school history, before going on to finish sixth in the finals of the 100 fly and lead-off the 800 free relay in a season-best 1:39.85 as the team finished fourth overall. On the final morning, Wright picked up his second qualifier of the week with a 43.65 in the prelims of the 100 free, before going on to finish second in the finals aat 44.09. He wrapped up his week by swimming the second leg on the third-place 400 free relay that swam 2:59.26. Overall, Wright scored a team-best 150.25 points and led W&M to finish third in the eight-team meet.
William & Mary will have five athletes competing at the U.S. Open in Atlanta the week after Thanksgiving, Dec. 4-7, looking to add to the five athletes already qualified for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials.
