SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Graduate student
Bryce Barnes scored on a driving lay-up with 3.8 seconds remaining to lift William & Mary men's basketball to its third-straight road win, 80-79, at Wofford on Tuesday night. For the first time in 84 years, the Tribe won its first three road games to start a season, and W&M improved to 3-0 for just the third time in the last 25 years.
The Tribe (3-0) also snapped Wofford's 17-game home-court winning streak, which was the fourth-longest in the country entering the night. The last opponent to win at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium was North Carolina to open last season.
Seniors
Andy Van Vliet and
Nathan Knight led the Tribe with 21 points apiece. Knight recorded his fourth-straight double-double and third this season with a game-high 11 rebounds, and Van Vliet connected on a career-high 5-of-9 from 3-point range. W&M received a massive lift off the bench from freshman
Miguel Ayesa who was a perfect 4-of-4 from 3-point range, finishing with 12 points in his collegiate debut. Junior
Luke Loewe chipped in 12 points on a perfect 5-of-5 from the field.
In a back-and-forth game, it was the Tribe that made the last push. The teams traded 8-0 run in the latter stages in the second half. Van Vliet hit back-to-back 3-pointer before Knight's dunk at the 3:48 mark gave W&M its largest lead at 74-66. The Terriers (2-1) answered with eight in a row, including back-to-back 3-pointers from Nathan Hoover and Strom Murphy, to pull even at 74, with just 1:14 left.
A Knight baseline spin move gave the Tribe the lead out of a timeout, and graduate student
Tyler Hamilton followed with a steal on the defensive end. He was fouled in transition and hit both free throws to give W&M the four-point advantage with just 50 seconds remaining.
Again, Wofford would not go quietly, hitting five-straight free throws to take the lead. Murphy was fouled on a 3-point attempt and hit all three at the charity stripe on the next Terrier possession. After a Tribe turnover, Chevez Goodwin pulled down an offensive rebound, saving it from going out of bounds and found Hoover under the hoop. The Wofford guard was fouled, and he calmly hit both free throws with 11.6 seconds left to put the home team back in front 79-78.
Barnes brought the ball up the court, and as Knight came over for a ball screen with around seven seconds remaining on the left side, the 5-11 guard crossed over to his left hand and gained a clear lane to the hoop. He finished with right hand at the rim to give W&M an 80-79 lead with 3.8 seconds remaining.
Murphy had a deep 35-foot look at 3-point for the winner in the final second. Loewe contested it, and the ball hit the front rim and bounced away to give the Tribe its third-straight road win.
How It Happened
- After Wofford scored the first bucket of the game, Loewe got the Tribe going with back-to-back 3-pointers. A
Thornton Scott floater and a Knight hook shoot extended the Green and Gold lead to 10-5 just over four minutes into the game.
- Tray Hollowell scored seven in a row to give the Terriers the lead. His 3-pointer at the 12:48 mark pushed the lead to 16-12.
- Knight scored six-straight points to draw the Tribe even at 19, before Van Vliet's corner with 8:05 remaining in the opening half gave W&M a 22-21 advantage.
- The Terriers used a 6-0 run, including a pair of buckets from Chevez Goodwin, to open up a five-point lead. The margin ballooned to seven, 34-27, on a Trevor Stumpe 3-pointer with under three minutes left.
- Van Vliet and Ayesa sparked an 8-0 Tribe run. The duo hit consecutive triples with Van Vliet's second of the game, giving W&M a 35-34 lead with 1:13 remaining in the first half.
- Wofford scored the final five points of the half to take a four-point lead at the intermission. Ryan Larson knocked down a pair of free throws, before Stumpe hit a triple in the closing seconds to stretch the lead to 39-35.
- Trailing 51-46 early in the second half, the Tribe hit back-to-back-to-back triples to take the lead. Van Vliet and sophomore
Quinn Blair canned 3's, before Blair found Ayesa for a corner trey at the 11:51 mark to push the Tribe lead to 55-51 and force a Wofford timeout.
- The Tribe lead blossomed to seven points as Ayesa hit his fourth 3-pointer of the game and Knight added a lay-up to give the visitors a 64-57 cushion with 9:10 left.
- Wofford used a 9-2 run to pull even at 66 on a Stumpe jumper with 5:33 remaining. Murphy, who finished with 18, tallied five of the Terriers' nine points during the run.
- Van Vliet sparked an 8-0 run to give W&M its largest lead. He knocked down back-to-back triples before a driving Scott hit Knight for a dunk at the 3:48 mark, extending the lead to 74-66.
- The Terriers responded once again with eight-straight of their own. Hoover and Murphy capped the run with back-to-back 3-pointers to tie the game at 74 and force a W&M timeout with 1:14 remaining.
- W&M retook the lead on a Knight spin-move baseline for a lay-up just 10 seconds later. On the ensuing Wofford possession, Hamilton came up with a steal and was fouled. He hits both free throws to extend the lead to 78-74.
- Wofford would not go away and used the free-throw line to move back in front. Murphy was fouled on a 3-point attempt with 43 seconds remaining and knocked down all three free throws. After a Tribe turnover, the Terriers pulled down an offensive rebound and Hoover was fouled on the putback. He hit both free throws with 11.6 seconds left to give the home team a 79-78 lead.
- On the winning possession, Barnes turned down a ball screen and crossed over for the driving lay-up to put W&M on top for good at 80-79 with 3.8 seconds left.
- Murphy's 35-foot 3-point attempt in the final second was contested by Loewe and hit the front rim and bounced away to give the Tribe the win.
