Colin Wright's Record Day Leads to CAA Swimmer of the Week Honors

William & Mary junior Colin Wright (Williamsburg, Va.) swam his way into the record books last Saturday against VMI, and was rewarded for his outstanding work with Colonial Athletic Association Swimmer of the Week honors on Tuesday.  This is the second award of the season for Wright and the third of his career, as well as the fourth time this season and second week in a row for W&M to win Swimmer of the Week honors.

While leading the Tribe men's team to a 193-66 win over VMI on Senior Day, Wright played a part in crushing three pool and dual-meet records, and nearly added a fourth as well.  First up was the 200 medley relay, where he split 19.5 on the anchor leg to help the team finish in a season-fast 1:30.12, the 11th fastest time in school history and just .04 off the pool and dual records.  Next, in the 50 free, he won in a time of 20.17 seconds, the 14th-fastest single race ever at W&M.  That broke his own pool and dual-meet records of 20.46 that Wright swam last year on Senior Day against Davidson.  After a short 15 minute break, Wright was back in the victor's circle in the 100 free, blasting a 44.28, the fastest time in the conference this season.  That broke the pool record of 45.19 that was set by Joe Eiden '17 back in 2017, and the dual-meet record of 44.98 that Wright himself swam against Duke two weeks ago.  Finally, in the 400 free relay, Wright lead-off the winning team with a 44.79 lead-off en route to a 3:02.00 finish, breaking the dual and pool records of 3:02.53 set against Davidson last year.  With his two wins on Saturday, Wright now has 16 on the year, and 43 in his career.

William & Mary is back in action next weekend, Feb. 8-10, at the Janis Hape Dowd Carolina Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C.  That meet will serve as a final selection and tune-up opportunity before the CAA Championships, Feb. 20-23 in Christiansburg, Va.
