W&M Field Hockey Opens CAA Play on Road at Northeastern, Hofstra

The William & Mary field hockey team hits the road to open play in the Colonial Athletic Association this weekend, traveling north to face Northeastern and Hofstra.  The Tribe will face the Huskies in Boston on Friday night, Sept. 28, at 6 p.m., before heading to Hempstead, N.Y., to take on the Pride on Sunday at noon.  Live stats are available for both matches, as well as live video for Friday's game against Northeastern.

Scouting the Tribe
W&M is 3-4 on the year, after tough losses to Wake Forest and No. 2 Connecticut last week.  Redshirt-senior Estelle Hughes (Newcastle, NSW, Australia) continues to lead the team and the conference in scoring with seven goals and 16 points, while junior Annie Snead (Midlothian, Va.) also retained her top ranking in assists per game with 0.57 (four in seven matches).  On defense, junior Morgan Connor (Bedford, N.Y.) has a 3.78 GAA and 30 saves (.600) while playing the majority of minutes in goal, and freshman Kimi Jones (Virginia Beach, Va.) has two games-worth of minutes with a 2.00 GAA and 10 saves (.714 percentage).

Scouting the Huskies
Northeastern is 2-7 to start the year after playing six ranked teams already.  June Curry-Lindahl leads the team with five goals and two assists, with Camille O'Conor close behind with four goals and an assist.  On defense, Julia Gluyas has a 2.74 GAA and 59 saves on a .711 save percentage.

Scouting the Pride
Hofstra is 2-9 on the year, with both of their wins coming via penalty shootouts, and will open CAA play against Towson on Friday.  Four players each have credit for two goals apiece, with Madison Georgiana and Cami Larsson leading the team with six points each (2g, 2a), while Madison Reed has a conference-best five assists.  On defense, Frankie O'Brien leads the NCAA with four defensive saves, and Betty Bosma (3.57 GAA) averages 7.82 saves per game.

The Series
- W&M trails the series with Northeastern, 7-11, but has won the last two meetings by identical 3-1 scores.  Last year, Woodard Hooper (Reston, Va.) scored twice and Christie van de Kamp (Midlothian, Va.) had the winner just a minute into the game in Williamsburg.
- The Tribe leads the series with Hofstra by a similar 11-7 margin, and has won five of the last six meetings.  Last year in Williamsburg, W&M won 5-0 as Emma MacLeod '18 scored four goals and Cammie Lloyd '18 added another.

News and Notes
- W&M is 23-10 (.697) all-time in conference openers, including wins each of the last two seasons and in four of the last five years.

- The chances of going 2-0 on the opening conference weekend, historically, are much tougher.  W&M has been 2-0 after two games in conference play just seven times out of 33 years so far (21.2%), most recently last season (5-0 over Hofstra and 3-1 over Northeastern at home).  Before 2017, the last time was three straight years from 2004-06, as well as in 1998, 1993, and 1990.  A 1-1 mark after two games is most likely (24 times in 33 years, 72.7%), while 0-2 has only happened twice, in 1994 and 2010 (6.1%).

- After scoring her seventh goal of the year against UCONN on Sunday, Estelle Hughes continues to rank among the national leaders in scoring.  She ranks ninth nationally in goals per game, at 1.0, and 14th nationally in points per game at 2.29.

- While it is early yet, Hughes' season averages of 2.29 points and 1.0 goals per game would both rank her sixth in school history, the best marks since Hall of Famer Ann Ekberg '03 averaged 2.43 and 1.10 in her All-American campaign of 2002.

- Annie Snead's season average of 0.57 assists per game would be the second-most in school history, behind only Hall of Famer Karen Thorne '84 with 0.61 in 1982.

- In the latest NFHCA National Poll, W&M had seven opponents ranked.  That includes No. 2 Connecticut, No. 4 Duke, No. 15 Virginia, No. 16 Old Dominion, No. 19 Delaware, No. 21 Wake Forest, and No. 25 Stanford.

- All seven of the Tribe's games this season have been won with at least four goals, the longest-such streak in school history.  Before Sunday's 6-1 win for No. 2 UCONN, the first six games had all been won with four goals each, which is the longest-ever streak of the same winning totals.

- With games against UCONN and Delaware, this is the first time since 1999 that the Tribe has played each of the previous two NCAA Champions in the same season.

- With the cancellation of the Davidson match, W&M is projected to finish the regular season with the fewest number of games played (16) since the 1989 season, which had 15 games before the South Atlantic Conference tournament.  W&M went 10-5 in those 15 games, and finished 12-6 after reaching the conference championship game.

- Hughes' hat trick against Brown was her first, and her fifth overall multi-goal game.  That's tied for the sixth-most in school history, and just one game behind what former teammates Emma MacLeod '18 and Cammie Lloyd '18 achieved.

- The hat trick also ties Hughes for 15th all-time at W&M in the single-game rankings, with the most goals since MacLeod scored four against Hofstra last fall.

- This year will mark the first time that the Tribe has ever played west of the Mississippi River.  W&M will head to California in October, facing Pacific on Oct. 13 and Stanford on Oct. 15.

- Over the summer, Christie van de Kamp was named to the Team USA U21 Junior National Team for the second year in a row.

- Both van de Kamp and senior Jenny McCann (Annandale, Va.) will serve as team captains this season.
