ELON, N.C. – Junior
Colin Lipke generated his third straight multiple hit performance, but the William & Mary baseball team fell to CAA rival Elon, 6-2, during the series opener on Thursday afternoon. Lipke notched two hits with a double and RBI to lead the Tribe (15-37, 3-19 CAA) against the Phoenix (33-21, 14-8 CAA).
After breaking the scoreless tie behind a sacrifice fly in the third, Elon pulled away with a pair of two-run frames in the fifth and sixth inning. The fifth inning saw the Phoenix collect three singles and a walk to bring in its two runs. During the sixth, back-to-back two-out RBI singles made it a 5-0 affair.
The Phoenix platted another run in the seventh inning, before the Green and Gold broke up the shutout. In the eighth, Lipke smashed a led off double to right center, freshman
Matt McDermott reached on an error and junior
Owen Socher singled to right field to load the bases. Rookie
David Hogarth then took four straight balls to walk in a run.
An attempt to climb out of a five-run hole allowed the Tribe to manufacture another run. Senior
Ryan Hall walked, advanced on a wild pitch and scored courtesy of a Lipke single up the middle. However, Elon turned a 6-3 double play to end the game.
