WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary baseball team was outlasted by CAA foe Delaware, 6-4, in 10 innings for Senior Day on Sunday afternoon. The Blue Hens (28-23, 12-9 CAA) rallied with four unanswered runs in the last two frames to upend the Tribe (15-35, 3-18 CAA) in extras.
The second inning saw each team score a run for a 1-all tie. A triple and single pushed across a run for UD, before junior
Colin Lipke led off the bottom half with a bomb to left field.
The Blue Hens used an unearned to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth. Zach Miller drew a walk, advanced on a sac bunt and moved 90 feet from home plate via passed ball. A sac fly to center field then platted Miller.
W&M would take the lead following a two-out rally in the bottom of the eighth. Hall sparked the late run after reaching safely on a fielding error at second base. Junior
Hunter Smith slapped a single to center field, before Lipke roped another single to left field. Senior
Luca Farina hit the third straight single to third base for a 4-2 margin.
However, UD loaded the bases and scored behind a walk and hit by pitch to create a 4-all deadlock in the ninth. The Blue Hens went on to manufacture two more runs on three hits in the top of the 10
th, before allowing just one hit in the bottom half to take the series finale.
Tribe Standouts
Lipke paced the Green and Gold with a 3-for-4 effort, including two RBI and the only homer of the contest. Smith and Farina both tallied two hits each, while Farina also drove in a run. Sophomores
Brandon Raquet and
Patrick Ryan doubled.
On the bump, sophomore
Chris Farrell threw a career-high six innings with two strikeouts, five hits, and two runs (one earned). Senior
Michael Toner also logged a scoreless innings with a strikeout.
Inside the Numbers
- The Delaware pitching staff combined for 14 strikeouts and just two walks.
- Four of W&M's nine hits occurred with two outs.
