WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary baseball team fell to Colonial Athletic Association rival Delaware in both games of a doubleheader by scores of 6-0 and 6-5 on Friday. The Blue Hens (27-23, 11-9 CAA) held the Tribe (15-34, 3-17) to five combined hits to secure the conference series.
On a historical note, senior
Ryan Hall became the program's all-time leader in at bats with 825. He is the second senior the set a new school standard after
Charlie Fletcher broke the appearance record at James Madison on April 15.
Game One: Delaware 6, W&M 0
Blue Hens' starter Kyle Hinton threw a complete-game two-hit shutout and the offense collected 14 hits in taking game one.
The Blue Hens stormed out to a 5-0 lead after manufacturing runs in the first five innings. In the opening frame, Delaware knocked three singles and platted its first run via sacrifice fly to right field. A two-out homer from Zach Miller scored another run in the second. The Blue Hens went on to generate three runs over the third and fourth inning.
The Tribe broke up a no-hitter in the bottom of the fifth after junior
Owen Socher belted a two-out single to center field. However, W&M would receive just one more hit, a
Brandon Raquet led off single through the right side, in the shutout.
Hinton (6-5) struck out 13 batters to pick up the win. Junior
Bodie Sheehan (2-8) took the loss after allowing five runs on nine hits in three innings.
Game Two: Delaware 6, W&M 5
Delaware recorded two home runs, while the pitching staff combined for 17 strikeouts to complete a doubleheader sweep of the Tribe.
After trailing by three runs, the Green and Gold narrowed the deficit to a one-run game in the bottom of the fourth. Hall drew a led off walk and juniors
Zach Pearson and
Hunter Smith knocked back-to-back singles to load the bases. A wild pitch scored Hall, before sophomore
David Angstadt pushed a sacrifice fly to right field for a 3-2 affair.
Nevertheless, UD took advantage of three errors for an unearned run in the fifth and hit a two-RBI homer to left field in the seventh, extending its lead to 6-2. In the ninth inning, the Tribe made a resilient comeback attempt
Three walks juiced the bases and set up rookie
Matt McDermott for a diving three-RBI triple to left center. However, the next two batters struck out to end the game.
Billy Sullivan IV (6-2) gained the win as he fanned seven batters and yielded just two runs on two hits. Sophomore
Wade Strain (2-4) was dealt the loss in giving up four runs (three earned) over six innings of work.
Tribe Standouts
McDermott's triple in the second game highlighted the offensive effort. The Tribe also received solid performances from its bullpen. Junior
Nick Butts hurled three shutout innings with just three hits. Graduate transfer
Andrew Burnick and sophomore
Michael Goldak combined for four scoreless frames and seven strikeouts.

Fletcher advanced his all-time appearance record to 102 and needs three more to tie third in the CAA…McDermott ties sixth in the CAA with three triples and matched his season-best three RBI…Angstadt posted his first RBI in his second career start…Game two marked W&M's 23
rd one-run game.
