BROOKLINE, Mass. – The William & Mary baseball team suffered a one-hit shutout as Northeastern took the weekend opener, 4-0, on Friday afternoon. The Huskies (21-13, 7-3) kept the Tribe (15-24, 3-10) hitless across seven innings in claiming a series lead.
During the first three innings, the Green and Gold generated multiple opportunities to take the initial advantage after placing a runner in scoring position in each frame. The Tribe got on the base paths behind four walks, but was unable to produce a hit as NU closed the door on each threat.
The Huskies took a moment to find its offense, but grabbed a 4-0 lead by manufacturing back-to-back two-run frames in the fifth and sixth. Three hits in each stanza allowed NU to score more than enough runs to earn the victory.
W&M broke up the no-hitter in the top of the eighth after senior
Ryan Hall smacked a two-out single to right field. Rookie
Matt McDermott was hit by pitch to move Hall into scoring position, but a strikeout ended the two-out rally attempt. The Tribe then went down in order in the ninth inning to conclude the game.
Tribe Standouts
The Green and Gold struggled offensively with leaders of Hall finishing 1-for-3 and sophomore
Patrick Ryan reaching twice on a pair of walks. Senior
Robert White hurled two scoreless innings of relief with three strikeouts and a hit.
