WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary baseball team dropped a 10-3 decision to Quinnipiac in the second of a three-game set on Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats (2-3) scored nine early runs and stranded 10 base runners to hold of a Tribe (1-6) comeback bid.
QU scored five runs on three hits and an error in the top of the third, but the true turning point occurred in the fourth inning. After a single, one-out walk and bunted single loaded the bases, Evan Vulgamore hit a grand slam for an almost insurmountable scoring advantage.
W&M chipped away by adding two runs on the scoreboard in the fifth. Freshman
Matt McDermott led off with a single, before moving to third on a double by senior
Ryan Hall. Senior
Luca Farina shipped a sac fly to right field to plate McDermott and sophomore
Patrick Ryan brought in Hall courtesy of a ground out to shortstop.
An attempt to ignite a two-out rally in the seventh fell short for the Tribe. Junior
Hunter Smith recorded a two-out run with a single through the left side, but the Green and Gold was halted by Mike DellaMedaglia's only strikeout.
DellaMedaglia stranded two runners in the eighth and the Tribe went down in order in the ninth.
