Men's Soccer Set for Top Seed JMU in CAA Semifinals

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Winners of two straight, the William & Mary men's soccer team heads to Harrisonburg, Va. to take on Colonial Athletic Association regular season champion James Madison in the league semifinals on Friday night. It marks the second-straight year that the No. 5-seeded Tribe meets the top-seeded Dukes at Sentara Park in the semifinals. The match follows the opening semifinal at approximately 7 p.m.
 
The reigning CAA Champion Tribe is in the same spot as the previous two years as the No. 5 seed. In both the 2016 and 2017 tournaments, W&M went on the road to claim semifinal victories over the No. 1 seed and advance to the title match culminating in the program's eighth CAA crown last season. 

Friday night's tilt will be broadcast on CAA.TV via Stretch Internet. Admission to the CAA Championship in Harrisonburg is FREE.

Scouting the Tribe
- As has been the case in recent years, the Tribe is playing its best soccer at the end of the year. Winners in three of its last four matches, the Green and Gold sits at 6-9-2 overall following its 3-2 CAA Quarterfinal victory at Delaware on Nov. 3.
- Offensively, the Tribe has hit its stride as well, averaging 2.5 goals per contest over the last four matches. W&M produced its top two scoring matches of the year with three at Delaware (Nov. 3) and four in the regular season finale against Charleston (Oct. 30).
- Over the last two matches, four different players have accounted for W&M's seven goals. Junior Reeves Trott, who has three goals during the stretch, recorded a brace in the quarterfinals at Delaware, including the game-winner on a beautiful chip shot in the 55th minute.
- Both redshirt senior Graham Guidry and junior Julian Ngoh have a goal and an assist over the last two matches. Guidry scored against Charleston and added an assist vs. the Blue Hens, while all three of Ngoh's points came in the CAA Quarterfinal.
- In the win over Charleston, the Green and Gold tallied a season-high four goals, five assists and 13 points. Senior Marcel Berry notched a pair of assists, his third career multi-assist game, and both freshman James Bradley and junior Lee Hogge recorded their first career assists.
- As a team, W&M ranks fourth in the CAA with 25 goals (1.47 per game). A total of 15 different players have registered a point this season, while 10 players have accounted for the Tribe's 25 goals and 13 players have totaled the team's 26 assists. W&M is third in the league in points (76) and assists.
- Senior Remi Frost and juniors Tanner Shane and Cole Smith each scored their first career goals over the final three matches of the regular season. Smith scored in the opening half against Drexel in a 2-1 win, while Shane and Frost found the back of the net in the victory over Charleston.
- Senior Antonio Bustamante has registered a point in four of his last six matches, but he has missed the last three contests due to injury. He leads the team with 15 points on four goals and seven assists. His assist per game average ranks 19th nationally, and he is 14th in the country in shots per game (3.9). Bustamante leads the CAA in assists and ranks fourth in points.
- Senior Ryder Bell leads the Tribe and ranks eighth in the CAA with five goals in 13 matches. He is also ninth in the league in points (13).
- Bustamante and Bell both rank among the active NCAA Division I leaders in points, goals and assists. Bustamante is fifth in career points (85), eighth in goals (34) and 32nd in assists (17), while Bell is 15th in points (76), 19th in goals (28) and 18th in assists (20), as of Nov. 5.
- Redshirt senior goalkeeper Sam Onyeador, who missed last season due to injury, has started the Tribe's last nine matches. He currently ranks eighth in the CAA in goals against average (GAA) (1.50) and third in saves per game (3.7). In his six CAA starts, Onyeador ranks fifth in the league with a GAA of 1.05.
- Head coach Chris Norris was named the W&M Alumni Association Coach of the Year at the Fall Awards Banquet in September. Norris won his third honor after guiding W&M to its eighth CAA Championship and 16th NCAA Tournament appearance in 2017. He was also named the VaSID State Coach of the Year. The three W&M Alumni Association awards are tied for the most with long-time head football coach Jimmye Laycock.
- Bustamante was one of 32 players named to the Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy Watch List in August. A consensus All-American in 2017, he was named a preseason First Team All-American by Soccer America, Top Drawer Soccer and College Soccer News.
 
Scouting James Madison
- James Madison won the CAA regular season for the second-straight year. The Dukes are 11-4-2 overall and 6-2 in CAA action. JMU had its six-match win streak snapped at the hands of Elon, 1-0, to close out the regular season on Oct. 30.
- The Dukes are ranked No. 3 in the United Soccer Coaches Atlantic Region Rankings and received votes in the national poll on Tuesday. JMU was ranked No. 29 in the latest College Soccer News national ranking.
- Head Coach Paul Zazenski was named CAA Coach of the Year after leading JMU to the regular season crown in his first season at the helm.
- Nine Dukes earned All-CAA honors, including first-team selections Yannick Franz and TJ Bush. Thomas Shores, Fernando Casero and Manuel Ferriol were tabbed second team, while Aaron Ward-Baptiste, Tom Judge and Brandon Clegg earned third-team accolades. Melker Anshelm was named on the All-Rookie Team. 
- Ward-Baptiste (5g, 4a), Carson Jeffris (6g, 2a) and Ferriol (5g, 4a) lead the Dukes with 14 points each. Both Ward-Baptiste and Ferriol scored four goals apiece in CAA play.
- Bush has played every minute in goal for JMU and owns a 0.51 GAA with 44 saves and 10 shutouts. Bush and the Dukes defense allowed only four goals CAA play with five shutouts. He ranks fourth nationally in shutouts and sixth in GAA.

Series History: W&M vs. JMU
- JMU leads the all-time series at 26-20-9, including a 13-5-1 mark in Harrisonburg. The Tribe has actually outscored the Dukes over the 55-game series at 76-74.
- James Madison owns an 8-3-2 mark in the series over the last 13 contests.
- Earlier this season, JMU downed the Tribe, 1-0, on a second-half penalty kick. W&M outshot its rival, 14-12, in the contest.
- Ryder Bell has scored twice in five career games with James Madison.
- The team's split two meetings last season. the Dukes won 4-3 in Harrisonburg during the regular season, while W&M won the CAA Semifinals, 1-0, also in Harrisonburg.
- Reeves Trott scored the game-winner in the Tribe's 1-0 CAA Semifinal win, following up a rebound on a shot from Bell.
 
Tribe CAA Championship History
- The Tribe owns eight CAA Tournament crowns with the most recent coming last season. W&M also claimed league titles in 1983, 1987, 1995, 1996, 1999, 2000 and 2010.
- The Green and Gold is making its 25th CAA Tournament appearance and third straight. W&M owns an all-time record of 33-16-1 (.670) in the event, including a 12-5 (.706) all-time in the semifinals
- W&M is the fifth seed in the CAA Championship for the sixth time overall and third year in a row. The Tribe is 9-3 as the No. 5 seed, including winning the 1999 and 2017 league crowns. Three of the five times W&M was the No. 5 seed it advanced to the CAA title match.
- In each of the Tribe's last three appearances in the CAA Championship (2013, 2016 and 2017), the Tribe played three matches and advanced all the way to the championship.
- Last season, W&M downed top-seeded JMU, 1-0, on the 25th-minute goal in the semifinals. In 2016, the Tribe took down No. 1 seed Hofstra, 3-1, in the semis.
- The Green and Gold is 4-4 all-time against the top seed in the CAA Championship. JMU holds a 4-3 advantage over W&M in the league tournament.
 
W&M Efforts in the CAA Championship
- Over the last three CAA Championships, W&M has scored 17 total goals, averaging 2.4 per match. Defensively, the Tribe has allowed eight goals (1.1 per match) to go along with two shutouts.
- In the previous two CAA Tournaments, senior Antonio Bustamante has been clutch, scoring nine goals, including three game-winners.
- Last season, Bustamante tallied a tournament-record four goals in the quarterfinal win at Hofstra, before recording a hat trick in the title match win over UNCW. He was named the tournament's most outstanding performer.
- Senior Ryder Bell totaled three assists in the 2017 CAA Tournament and notched another in the 2018 CAA Quarterfinal win over Delaware. Last season, he assisted on the game-winner in the 1-0 semifinal win at James Madison, before positing a pair of assists in the title match vs. UNCW on his way to all-championship team honors.
- Junior Julian Ngoh owns two goals and two assists over the last two CAA Tournaments. He notched a goal and an assist in the 2018 quarterfinal win over Delaware. In 2017, his second-half goal in the title match with UNCW pulled W&M even on the way to a 4-2 win.
- Senior back Remi Frost owns an assist in each of the last two CAA Tournaments.
- Junior Reeves Trott has scored three goals for the Tribe over the last three tournament matches. He recorded a brace in the 3-2 quarterfinal win over Delaware on Nov. 3. Last season, he scored the game-winner in last season's CAA Semifinal win at James Madison.
- Fifth-year senior Graham Guidry assisted on the game-winner in the 4-2 CAA Championship win over UNCW and added an assist in Saturday's quarterfinal win at Delaware.

Six Players Earn CAA Honors
- Seniors Antonio Bustamante and Ryder Bell earned All-CAA First Team honors for the third and second-straight seasons, respectively, and classmate Marcel Berry was a second team selection for the fourth year in a row.
- Sophomore Sam Golan garnered All-CAA Third Team honors, while freshmen James Bradley and John Eberle were two of the 12 CAA All-Rookie Team picks.
- Bustamante is the fifth player in program history to earn first team honors on three occasions during his career, while both he and Berry joined a select list of nine Tribe players as four-time All-CAA selections.
- Bell was the 17th multi-time All-CAA First Team pick in program history, and along with Berry and Bustamante, is one of seven three-time all-league selections under head coach Chris Norris.
- The Tribe's two All-Rookie honorees were tied for the most in the league and brought the program's total to 18 under Norris. It marks the third time in the last four years that the Tribe placed multiple players on the all-rookie team and fifth time under Norris.
- Bustamante joined a group that includes Wade Barrett '98 (four), Steve Kokulis '90 (four), Jon Tuttle '89 (three) and Nathanial Baako '11 (three) as three-time All-CAA First Team picks.

Bell Named a Finalist for Senior CLASS Award
- Senior Ryder Bell was one of 10 men's soccer student-athletes from across the country to be named a finalist for the 2018 Senior CLASS Award, recognizing the NCAA DI senior with notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
- The finalists were chosen by a selection committee from the list of 30 candidates announced in September. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to help select the winner, and fans are encouraged to vote on the Senior CLASS Award website through Nov. 18, 2018. Fan votes will be combined with media and Division I head coaches' votes to determine the winner.
- The Senior CLASS Award winners will be announced during the 2018 NCAA Men's and Women's College Cup® championships later this fall.
- Bell is a two-time All-CAA selection, including first team honors last season, a two-time United Soccer Coaches All-Region Third Team selection and a three-time Virginia Sports Information Director's All-State Second Team selection. He ranks among the top 20 among active NCAA Division I players in points, goals and assists.
- An economics major with a minor in marketing, Bell became the 10th W&M men's soccer player to be named a Google Cloud/College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-American, earning third-team honors in 2017. He was named the 2018 winner of W&M's prestigious Bruce Davidson Memorial Scholarship.
- Within the Williamsburg community, Bell and the W&M soccer program have been heavily involved with Child Development Resources (CDR). CDR strives to inspire and empower children, families and early childhood professionals to reach their full potential, whatever their challenges, and serves approximately 1,200 children and their families each year. He has volunteered with CDR and tutored Math at Hornsby Middle School.

 In the Record Books
- Senior Antonio Bustamante moved into the Tribe's all-time top 10 in both points (85) and goals (34) this season.
- In W&M's 2-2 draw with Northeastern, Bustamante scored his 33rd career goal to move into 10th place on the program's career goals list.
- He is now just one away from ninth and two shy of fifth (four players currently tied for fifth with 36 goals) on the career list.
- In the Tribe's 3-2 win over Longwood on Sept. 11, the senior midfielder moved into 10th on the career points list. He current sits at No. 10 with 85 points (34 goals and 17) and trails ninth by two and eighth by three.   
- With his goal at Delaware on Oct. 13, Bustamante notched his eighth career game-winning goal, which ranks 12th in program history.

Difficult Schedule
- The Green and Gold's non-conference slate was a gauntlet. The Tribe's eight non-conference opponents have combined for a 73-51-15 record through Nov. 8.
- Five of those eight nonconference foes were rated inside the RPI top 50, as of Nov. 4, including No. 3 North Carolina, No. 9 Virginia Tech, No. 28 NC State, No. 35 Coastal Carolina, and No. 44 Old Dominion.
- Including CAA foes, nine of the Tribe's 16 opponents are among the top 100, as of Nov. 4, including seven top-50 teams.
- Four CAA teams are currently in the RPI top 100, as of Oct. 28, including No. 31 UNCW, No. 41 James Madison, No. 85 Hofstra and No. 86 Drexel.
