The William & Mary women's swimming team qualified 20 for the finals on Sunday at the TYR Invitational, including 10 in the championship heats. The Tribe moved past Michigan State into second place with 564.5 points to 553 points, while Northwestern leads at 1,201.5 points.
50 Fly
- The first event of the day was the 50 fly, where senior
Katie Sell (Fredericksburg, Va.) timed 25.35 seconds to earn the second seed in tonight's championship finals. She'll be joined in the top heat by freshman
Missy Cundiff (Leesburg, Pa.), who was eighth in 25.65.
200 Back
- In the 200 back, sophomore
Tara Tiernan (West Hartford, Conn.) took fifth overall to advance to the championship finals with a time of 2:02.05.
- Three freshmen advanced to the consolation finals, led by
Anna Kenna (Chantilly, Va.) in 10th place at 2:03.95. That time improved her to 16th all-time at W&M among athletes.
- Also advancing was
Sonora Baker (Mechanicsville, Va.), 11th in 2:04.11, and
Ellie Henry (Southern Pines, N.C.), who swam 2:04.95 for 13th.
100 Free
- In the 100 free, senior
Annie Miller (Houston, Texas) advanced to the A finals, timing 51.93 for eighth overall.
- Freshmen teammates Cundiff and
Inez Olszewski (New York, N.Y.) tied for 17th overall and the top spot in the bonus finals, as both hit the wall in 52.89 seconds.
- Also advancing to the bonus final, her second of the day, was Tiernan who swam 52.96 to take 19th overall.
200 Breast
- Sophomore
Megan Bull (Hillsborough, N.J.) was up to old tricks in the 200 breast, cruising through all eight walls to finish fourth overall in 2:16.86 and to earn a spot in the championship finals. Her time was the 14th-fastest ever at W&M.
- She'll be joined in the top heat by senior
Claire Williams (Apex, N.C.), who swam 2:18.75 to take eighth overall.
- Making the consolation finals were two more athletes. Sophomore
Diana Tramontano (Greenwich, Conn.) swam 2:19.74 for ninth overall and the top spot in the heat, and also improved to 16th all-time among Tribe athletes. Junior
Lauren Freeman (Fairfax Station, Va.), meanwhile, timed 2:21.48 to advance in 14th overall.
200 Fly
- Finishing out the morning was the 200 fly, and the Tribe finished it with a bang as four women advanced to the championship finals in addition to one in each of the other two finals.
- Leading the way was senior
Maria Oceguera (New Rochelle, N.Y.), who earned the top seed with a time of 2:01.25. That was the 11th-fastest race ever at W&M.
- Freshman
Gabby Zhang (Ashburn, Va.) was third overall in 2:03.42, improving to ninth all-time among Tribe athletes, and her classmate
Rebecca Rogers (Richmond, Va.) was fifth in 2:04.97. That ranks her 14th in school history.
- Junior
Yuka Kuwahara (Ashburn, Va.) made it four in the championship finals with her sixth-place time of 2:04.99, which tied her personal-best and ranks her 15th all-time at W&M.
- Sophomore
Madeline High (Raleigh, N.C.) advanced to the consolation finals in 11th place, stopping the clock in 2:06.06, and junior
Margaret Williams (Williamsburg, Va.) made the bonus finals in a time of 2:09.44 for 24th overall.
Finals begin with at 3 p.m. Central, 4 p.m. Eastern in all five events, as well as platform diving, the 100 IM, the 1,650 free, and the 400 free relay.
