The William & Mary women's swimming team advanced a meet-best 27 athletes to finals on Saturday at Northwestern's TYR Invitational, including eight in the championship finals and 13 in the consolation finals. That allowed the Tribe to overtake Michigan State in the team standings by a narrow two-point margin, and lifted W&M into second place with 333 points behind host Northwestern (719 pts).
400 IM
- Sophomore
Megan Bull (Hillsborough, N.J.) led the way in the 400 IM, swimming 4:25.05 for third place overall and one of three championship final spots for the Tribe.
- Also make the top heat in finals was senior
Morgan Smith (Verona, N.J.), who swam 4:27.56 for seventh overall, and freshman
Gabby Zhang (Ashburn, Va.), eighth in 4:27.90. That performance pushed Zhang into 15th all-time at W&M.
- W&M also had two qualifiers in the consolation finals. Junior
Julia Bland (Sea Girt, N.J.) tied 4:28.16 to take ninth overall and earn the top seed in the heat, while freshman
Rebecca Rogers (Richmond, Va.) was 15th overall in 4:33.89.
100 Fly
- Senior
Maria Oceguera (New Rochelle, N.Y.) swam a personal-best 55.38 seconds in the 100 fly to qualify for the championship finals in sixth place, where she'll be joined by classmate
Katie Sell (Fredericksburg, Va.), who was seventh in 55.71 seconds. Oceguera's time moved her up to ninth in school history among athletes.
- Three Tribe swimmers made the consolation finals, led by sophomore
Madeline High (Raleigh, N.C.) who swam a personal-best 56.33 for 12th place. That improved High to 13th on the all-time athletes list.
- Also making the B finals were Zhang, qualifying in her second event of the day in 56.82 seconds, as well as junior
Yuka Kuwahara (Ashburn, Va.), who was 15th overall in 57.12 seconds.
- Freshman
Anna Kenna (Chantilly, Va.) qualified for the bonus finals, swimming 58.05 seconds for 23rd overall.
200 Free
- Bull came through with her second championship berth of the day in the 200 free, swimming 1:51.88 to advance in fifth place.
- Right behind her was classmate
Tara Tiernan (West Hartford, Conn.), 1:52.05 in sixth place, and freshman
Inez Olszewski (New York, N.Y.) made it three in the championship finals with her seventh-place time of 1:52.32.
- Juniors
Margaret Williams (Williamsburg, Va.) and
Norah Hunt (Stuarts Draft, Va.) both advanced to the consolation finals. Williams swam 1:53.19 for 11th overall, while Hunt was 16th with a time of 1:54.86.
- Two more for the Tribe advanced to "C" finals. Junior
Emma Herold (Kohler, Wisc.) touched the wall in 1:55.22 for 19th overall, and senior
Annie Miller (Houston, Texas) timed 1:55.56 for 22nd place.
100 Breast
- All four of the Tribe's competitors in the 100 breast advanced to finals, with three making the consolation heat. Senior
Claire Williams (Apex, N.C.) led the way in 13th place, timing 1:05 flat, while
Ellie Henry (Southern Pines, N.C.) was 14th in 1:05.43 and
Diana Tramontano (Greenwich, Conn.) took 15th, stopping the clock in 1:05.53.
- Junior
Lauren Freeman (Fairfax Station, Va.) qualified for the C finals in 19th place, touching the wall in 1:05.90.
100 Back
- The freshman Henry came right back in the 100 back, qualifying for the consolation finals in 56.94 seconds. She'll be joined by her classmate Kenna, 13th in 57.40 seconds, as well as by High, who made her second finals trip of the day by taking 14th in a time of 57.49 seconds.
- Freshman
Sonora Baker (Mechanicsville, Va.) earned the top spot in the bonus finals after swimming 57.68 seconds for 17th place, just ahead of Tiernan who took 18th in 58.21 seconds.
The finals of all five events, as well as the one-meter diving, 200 medley relay, and the 800 free relay, begins tonight at 5 p.m. Central, 6 p.m. Eastern.
