The William & Mary women's swimming team heads into the final day at the TYR Invitational on Sunday neck-and-neck with Big Ten foe Michigan State for second overall, after a strong showing in Saturday's finals session. Host Northwestern leads with 1007.5 points, but the Spartans and the Tribe are separated by just 10.5 points for second, with Michigan State leading 459-448.5.
200 Medley Relay
- In the first event of the night, the 200 medley relay, W&M finished third overall in 1:42.81, the 13th-fastest race in school history. Freshman
Anna Kenna (Chantilly, Va.) led things off in 26.62, before passing the baton to classmate
Ellie Henry (Southern Pines, N.C.) and seniors
Katie Sell (Fredericksburg, Va.) and
Annie Miller (Houston, Texas).
- W&M also had a seventh-place finish in the medley relay, thanks to the team of
Sonora Baker (Mechanicsville, Va.),
Lauren Freeman (Fairfax Station, Va.),
Maria Oceguera (New Rochelle, N.Y.), and
Missy Cundiff (Leesburg, Va.), who combined the go 1:44.73.
- Taking 12th overall was the team of
Madeline High (Raleigh, N.C.),
Margaret Williams (Williamsburg, Va.),
Yuka Kuwahara (Ashburn, Va.), and
Nina Lesser (Centerport, N.Y.), who stopped the clock in 1:47.17.
400 IM
- Senior
Morgan Smith (Verona, N.J.) dropped major time from this morning in the 400 IM, finishing fifth overall in 4:24.87.
- Right behind her was junior
Julia Bland (Sea Girt, N.J.), who took sixth in 4:25.24. Freshman
Gabby Zhang (Ashburn, Va.) also scored in the A final, swimming 4:31.03 for eighth overall.
- Fellow rookie
Rebecca Rogers (Richmond, Va.) rounded out the scoring in 16th place, with a time of 4:35.53.
100 Fly
- The senior Oceguera just used that relay as a warm-up for the show she put on in the rest of the session. In the 100 fly, she swam a lifetime-best 55.13 to place sixth overall, and also improved to sixth in school history among Tribe athletes.
- Her classmate Sell finished right behind her, taking seventh overall in 56.28 seconds.
- In the consolation finals High swam a personal-best 56.22 for 10th place, finishing a fingernail in front of Zhang who also set a best of 56.24 seconds for 11th. The pair now rank 12th and 13th, respectively, in school history among W&M athletes.
- Junior
Yuka Kuwahara (Ashburn, Va.) tied for 14th overall in 57.40 seconds, and the freshman Kenna swam 57.84 seconds for 21st place.
200 Free
- Sophomore
Megan Bull (Hillsborough, N.J.) passed up a spot in the 400 IM championship heat to concentrate on the 200 free, and it paid off in a big way as she swam 1:49.83 and placed third overall.
- Sophomore
Tara Tiernan (West Hartford, Conn.) was seventh overall in 1:51.29, and freshman
Inez Olszewski (New York, N.Y.) swam 1:52.09 for eighth, a time that for the moment at least improved her to 16th all-time among Tribe athletes.
- In the consolation finals the junior Williams swam to 10th place in a time of 1:52.47, and
Norah Hunt (Stuarts Draft, Va.) was 16th overall in 1:56.39.
- The bonus finals saw
Emma Herold (Kohler, Wisc.) take 22nd in 1:55.36, and Miller rounded out the line-up with her 24th-place time of 1:57.16.
100 Breast
- Sophomore
Diana Tramontano (Greenwich, Conn.) led the way for W&M in the consolation finals of the 100 breast, improving significantly from the prelims to time 1:04.69 and take 13th overall.
- Senior
Claire Williams (Apex, N.C.) took 14th right behind her in 1:05.10, and the rookie Henry swam 1:06.26 for 15th overall.
- Freeman won the bonus finals, touching the wall in 1:05.07 for 17th place overall.
100 Back
- Continuing with the theme of big improvements at night, the freshman Kenna swam to 11th place overall in the 100 back with a time of 56.66 seconds, improving her to 15th all-time at W&M.
- Right behind her in quick succession were High, 12th in 57.29 seconds, and Henry, who was 13th in 57.58 seconds.
- Baker won her bonus heat, timing 57.20 second for 17th overall.
800 Free Relay
- The evening wrapped up with perhaps one of the most impressive performances, with the Tribe finishing second and third in the 800 free relay.
- Second and 34 team points went to the quartet of Oceguera, Tiernan, Olszewski, and Bull, who combined to time 7:24.79, the 12th-fastest time in school history. Oceguera's lead-off split of 1:50.76 was a lifetime-best, and improved her to 12th all-time at W&M while knocking her teammate Olszewski off the top-16 list.
- The team of Smith,
Margaret Williams, Bland, and Herold combined to time 7:35.02, finishing third overall ahead of scoring teams from each of the other schools including Michigan State.
The TYR Invitational wraps up on Sunday, with prelims at 9 a.m. Central/10 a.m. Eastern, and finals beginning at 4 p.m. Central/5 p.m. Eastern. Events on the final day include the 1,650 free, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 back, 200 fly, the 100 IM, platform diving, 50 fly, and the 400 free relay.
