The William & Mary women's swimming team had a very successful first session of the Northwestern TYR Invitational on Friday morning, qualifying 20 swimmers to tonight's finals with at least one A finalist in each of four events. The host Wildcats lead the way in the preliminary scoring with 206 points after five prelims events, with the Tribe second at 116 points, just ahead of third-place Michigan State (113).
50 Breast
- Leading things off in the 50 breast was freshman
Ellie Henry (Southern Pines, N.C.), who qualified for the A final in 29.48 seconds for eighth place.
- Junior
Lauren Freeman (Fairfax Station, Va.) was 10th in 29.63 to make the B finals, where she'll be joined by
Diana Tramontano (Greenwich, Conn.) and
Claire Williams (Apex, N.C.). Tramontano was 14th overall in 30.18 seconds, with Williams close behind in 30.36 for 15th place.
500 Free
- Next up was the 500 free, where the Tribe put an astonishing five in the championship finals in addition to two more in the consolation heat.
- Sophomore
Megan Bull (Hillsborough, N.J.) led the way in third place, swimming the 16th-fastest time in school history, 4:52.86.
- Senior
Maria Oceguera (New Rochelle, N.Y.) was fourth in 4:54.88, just ahead of junior
Norah Hunt (Stuarts Draft, Va.) who swam a lifetime-best 4:55.72 for fifth place. Hunt improved to 11th all-time among Tribe athletes.
- Senior
Morgan Smith (Verona, N.J.) was sixth in 4:56.84, and sophomore
Tara Tiernan (West Hartford, Conn.) swam 4:57.70 to take seventh overall.
- Making the B final was freshman
Inez Olszewski (New York, N.Y.), 14th in 5:06.32, as well as junior
Yuka Kuwahara (Ashburn, Va.), who took 16th in 5:06.70.
200 IM
- The freshman Henry was back in action in the 200 IM, making her second championship final with an eighth-place and lifetime-best time of 2:05.21. That moved Henry all the way up to 13th in school history.
- Junior
Julia Bland (Sea Girt, N.J.) qualified for the B final in 2:06.43, good for 13th overall.
- The senior Smith swam 2:06.90 for 17th and a spot in the C finals, her second of the day, where she'll be joined by sophomore
Madeline High (Raleigh, N.C.), 19th in 2:07.43, as well as freshman
Gabby Zhang (Ashburn, Va.), who swam 2:08.49 for 24th overall.
50 Free
- W&M had three more A finalists in the 50 free. Senior
Annie Miller (Houston, Texas) and freshman
Missy Cundiff (Leesburg, Va.) finished second and third, respectively, in 23.07 seconds and 23.41 seconds. Cundiff's time moved her all the way up to 10th in school history among Tribe athletes.
- Those two will be joined in the top heat of finals by senior
Katie Sell (Fredericksburg, Va.), who touched the wall in 23.78 seconds for eighth place.
- Freshman
Anna Kenna (Chantilly, Va.) rounded out the morning's qualifiers in 22nd place at 24.28 seconds, qualifying for the C finals tonight.
Finals in all four events, as well as the 50 back, three-meter diving, 200 free relay, and the 400 medley relay, begin tonight at 5 p.m. Central, 6 p.m. Eastern.
