The William & Mary women's swimming team had several top performances on Friday night at Northwestern's TYR Invitational, earning third place in the seven-team standings after the first day of action. The host Wildcats lead the standings with 483.5 points, with Michigan State second with 241.5 points and the Tribe third at 232.
200 Free Relay
- W&M started the evening with a strong second-place performance in the 200 free relay. Senior
Annie Miller (Houston, Texas) led off with a 23.17 split, and was followed by freshman
Anna Kenna (Chantilly, Va.) in 23.66. Another rookie,
Missy Cundiff (Leesburg, Va.), then hit the water and blasted a 22.59 split, the fastest of any leg on any team in the race, before giving way to senior
Katie Sell (Fredericksburg, Va.) who split 22.98 on the anchor, the fastest anchor in the race, to bring W&M home in 1:32.40. That was the ninth-fastest time in school history.
- The Tribe also got a 10th place finish out of the team of
Nina Lesser (Centerport, N.Y.), who went 24.91 on the lead-off,
Tara Tiernan (West Hartford, Conn.),
Inez Olszewski (New York, N.Y.), and
Sonora Baker (Mechanicsville, Va.).
- The team of
Emma Herold (Kohler, Wisc.),
Emily Schroeder (West Windsor, N.J.),
Gabby Zhang (Ashburn, Va.), and
Margaret Williams (Williamsburg, Va.) went 1:38.23 for 12th overall, including a 24.81 lead-off for Herold and a 22.78 anchor for Williams.
50 Breast
- Freshman
Ellie Henry (Southern Pines, N.C.) improved her seed from the morning prelims, and improved to seventh overall in the 50 breast at 29.40 seconds.
- Also moving up was junior
Lauren Freeman (Fairfax Station, Va.), who swam 29.55 seconds for 10th overall. Senior
Claire Williams (Apex, N.C.) took 13th in 29.98 seconds, and sophomore
Diana Tramontano (Greenwich, Conn.) was 14th in 30.18 seconds.
500 Free
- Senior
Maria Oceguera (New Rochelle, N.Y.) finished second in the 500 free, moving up the standings thanks to her 4:52.90 performance.
- Sophomore
Megan Bull (Hillsborough, N.C.) was close behind in 4:54.38 for third place overall, and junior
Norah Hunt (Stuarts Draft, Va.) swam 4:55.96 for fifth place.
- Hunt just barely touched-out Tiernan, who was sixth in a personal-best 4:55.98 that improved her to 12th all-time at W&M. Senior
Morgan Smith (Verona, N.J.) also finished under five minutes, swimming 4:59.01 for seventh overall.
- In the consolation finals, Olszewski took 11th in 5:02.76, and junior
Yuka Kuwahara (Ashburn, Va.) was 13th, stopping the clock in 5:04.89.
200 IM
- The freshman Henry was back in action in the 200 IM, finishing eighth overall in 2:07.15.
- Junior
Julia Bland (Sea Girt, N.J.) added a point to the Tribe's total in 16th place at 2:07.66.
- In the bonus heat, Smith came back on short rest and won the heat in 2:06.55, placing 17th overall. Sophomore
Madeline High (Raleigh, N.C.) was 19th in 2:07.35, finishing just .01 ahead of Zhang in 20th place.
50 Free
- Still keyed up from her big relay swim earlier, the rookie Cundiff came back in the open 50 free and swam a season-fast 23.27 to take second overall. That also moved her up into a tie for seventh all-time among Tribe athletes.
- Right behind Cundiff in third place was Miller, who touched the wall in 23.28 seconds.
- Sell swam 23.91 to move up two spots from the morning, finishing sixth overall.
- The freshman Kenna swam 24.29 seconds, and finished 21st overall in the C finals.
400 Medley Relay
- Wrapping things up for the night was the 400 medley relay, where all three of W&M's teams finished in the top-12.
- Top honors went to the team of Tiernan, Freeman, Oceguera, and Bull. After Tiernan started things off in 57.52 seconds, the quartet progress until finishing fifth overall in 3:48.08.
- Kenna led off the second team in 57.41 seconds, and was followed by Henry, Sell, and Miller to a time of 3:49.06 and seventh place.
- Baker swam 57.72 to start the third relay, which also included
Claire Williams, Zhang, and Cundiff, and finish 12th in a time of 3:52.40.
The TYR Invitational continues on Saturday with prelims beginning at 9 a.m. Central, 10 a.m. Eastern. Events on day two include the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, one-meter diving, the 200 medley relay, and the 800 free relay.
