Men's Soccer Begins CAA Title Defense at Delaware on Saturday Night

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary men's soccer team begins defense of its Colonial Athletic Association crown as it travels to No. 4 seed Delaware for Saturday night's league quarterfinal. The rematch of the 2016 CAA Championship match kicks off at 7 p.m. from Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium, and it will be streamed on CAA.TV via Stretch Internet.  
 
The Tribe begins the 2018 edition of the league championship in the same spot as the previous two as the No. 5 seed. In both the 2016 and 2017 tournaments, W&M went on the road to claim quarterfinal victories and eventually made it to the title match culminating in the program's eighth CAA title last season.

Scouting the Tribe
- W&M closed out the regular season winning three of its final four CAA matches, including a 4-1 win over Charleston on Tuesday night. The Tribe sits at 5-9-2 overall, including a 3-3-2 CAA mark.
- Seniors Graham Guidry and Remi Frost­t as well as juniors Tanner Shane and Reeves Trott found the back of the net in the win over the Cougars. The goals were the first in the careers of Frost and Shane. Guidry ranks third on the team with three goals, and it was Trott's second marker of the year.
- In the win over Charleston, the Green and Gold tallied a season-high four goals, five assists and 13 points. Senior Marcel Berry notched a pair of assists, his third career multi-assist game, and both freshman James Bradley and junior Lee Hogge recorded their first career assists.
- As a team, W&M averages 1.4 goals per game, which ranks fourth in the CAA. A total of 14 different players have registered a point this season, while 10 players have accounted for the Tribe's 22 goals and 12 players have totaled the team's 23 assists. W&M is fourth in the league in points and third in assists.
- Included in the Tribe's strong closing CAA stretch, W&M downed Delaware, 1-0, on an 88th minute goal by senior Antonio Bustamante, and the Tribe topped Drexel, 2-1, thanks to goals from Guidry and junior Cole Smith. It was the first marker of Smith's career.
- Bustamante has registered a point in four of his last six matches, but he has missed the previous two contests due to injury. He leads the team with 15 points on four goals and seven assists. His assist total ranks 23rd nationally, and he is 18th in the country in shots per game (3.9). Bustamante leads the CAA in assists and ranks fourth in points.
- Senior Ryder Bell leads the Tribe and ranks eighth in the CAA with five goals in 12 matches. He is also ninth in the league in points (12).
- Bustamante and Bell both rank among the NCAA Division I active leaders in points, goals and assists. Bustamante is fourth in career points (85), eighth in goals (34) and 27th in assists (17), while Bell is 13th in points (75), 18th in goals (28) and 19th in assists (19), as of Oct. 28.
- Redshirt senior goalkeeper Sam Onyeador, who missed last season due to injury, has started the Tribe's last eight matches. He currently ranks eighth in the CAA in goals against average (GAA) (1.60) and second in saves per game (3.67).
- As W&M closed CAA play at 3-1 over its final four matches, Onyeador and the Tribe defense came on strong. In his last four league matches, Onyeador posted a GAA of 0.76, allowing just three goals. Overall in six CAA starts, he ranks fifth in the league with a GAA of 1.05.
- Head coach Chris Norris was named the W&M Alumni Association Coach of the Year at the Fall Awards Banquet in September. Norris won his third honor after guiding W&M to its eighth CAA Championship and 16th NCAA Tournament appearance in 2017. He was also named the VaSID State Coach of the Year. The three W&M Alumni Association awards are tied for the most with long-time head football coach Jimmye Laycock.
- Bustamante was one of 32 players named to the Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy Watch List in August. A consensus All-American in 2017, he was named a preseason First Team All-American by Soccer America, Top Drawer Soccer and College Soccer News.
 
Scouting Delaware
- The Blue Hens enter the CAA Championship as the No. 4 seed after going 4-3-1 in CAA play. UD picked up wins over Charleston (2-1), Elon (1-0), Drexel (2-1) and Northeastern (2-1) to go along with a 2-2 draw at No. 11 UNCW on Oct. 20.
- Most recently, Delaware dropped a 2-1 match in its regular season finale at Penn on Tuesday. Senior goalkeeper Blai Palmi converted a penalty kick for the Blue Hens lone goal against the Quakers.
- Freshman defender Timo Hummrich leads UD in scoring with four goals, all in CAA play. He tallied both goals against Charleston and added game-winners against both Elon and Northeastern. Hummrich was named the CAA Rookie of the Week on three occasions this season.
- Junior midfielder Robert Campbell is second on the team with six points on two goals and two assists, while junior Fede Prieto owns a pair of goals for the Blue Hens.
- Senior goalkeepers Todd Morton and Blai Palmi have both seen action for UD this season. Morton has started 13 matches with a 1.75 GAA, 35 saves and one shutout. Palmi has stated three matches with a 2.20 GAA and nine saves.
- UD has scored 15 goals in its 16 matches, while allowing 30 markers.
 
Series History: W&M vs. Delaware
- The Tribe holds a 14-7-2 advantage in the all-time series with Delaware, including a 6-3-1 mark in Newark. W&M has outscored the Blue Hens, 45-25, in those 23 games.
- UD holds the upper hand recently, going 5-1-1 over the last seven contests.
- Earlier this season, W&M won at Delaware, 1-0, on an 88th minute goal from Antonio Bustamante off a pass from Ryder Bell. Fifth-year senior goalkeeper Sam Onyeador made five saves in earning his first career shutout.
- Last season, the Tribe and Blue Hens drew, 1-1, in Williamsburg thanks to a Reeves Trott header in the 83rd minute.
- The teams met in the 2016 CAA Championship match in Hempstead, N.Y., with Delaware scoring the final two markers in picking up a 2-1 victory.
 
Tribe CAA Championship History
- The Tribe owns eight CAA Tournament crowns with the most recent coming last season. W&M also claimed league titles in 1983, 1987, 1995, 1996, 1999, 2000 and 2010.
- The Green and Gold is making its 25th CAA Championship appearance and third straight. W&M owns an all-time record of 32-16-1 (.663) in the event, including a 13-5-1 (.711) all-time in the quarterfinals.
- W&M is the fifth seed in the CAA Championship for the sixth time. The Tribe is 8-3 as the No. 5 seed, including winning the 1999 and 2017 league crowns. Three of the five times W&M was the No. 5 seed it advanced to the CAA title match.
- It marks the third-straight season that the Tribe will be the No. 5 seed in the CAA Championship. Along with winning the title last season, the Tribe advanced to the CAA Championship match in 2016.
- In each of the Tribe's last three appearances in the CAA Championship (2013, 2016 and 2017), the Tribe played three matches and advanced all the way to the championship.
- In 2016, the Tribe posted a 1-0 quarterfinal win at Elon as the No. 5 seed. Last season, the No. 5-seeded Green and Gold won at Hofstra, 4-1.
- The Green and Gold is 6-4 all-time against the No. 4 seed in the CAA Championship. W&M is 1-1 vs. Delaware in the league tournament.
 
W&M Efforts in the CAA Championship
- Over the last two CAA Championships, W&M has scored 14 total goals, averaging 2.3 per match. Defensively, the Tribe has allowed six goals (one per match) to go along with two shutouts.
- In the previous two CAA Tournaments, senior Antonio Bustmante has been clutch, scoring nine goals, including three game-winners.
- Last season, Bustamante tallied a tournament-record four goals in the quarterfinal win at Hofstra, before recording a hat trick in the title match win over UNCW.
- In the 2016 CAA Quarterfinals, Bustamante scored the game-winner at Elon as well.
- In 2017, senior Ryder Bell totaled three assists in the CAA Semifinals and Championship. He assisted on the game-winner in the 1-0 semifinal win at James Madison, before positing a pair of assist in the title match vs. UNCW.
- Junior Julian Ngoh tallied a goal and an assist in the 2017 CAA Tournament. His second-half goal in the title match with UNCW pulled W&M even on the way to a 4-2 win.
- Senior back Remi Frost owns an assist in each of the last two CAA Tournaments.
- Junior Reeves Trott scored the game-winner in last season's CAA Semifinal win at James Madison, following up off a rebound from Bell's shot off the post.
- Fifth-year senior Graham Guidry assisted on the game-winner in the 4-2 CAA Championship win over UNCW.

Six Players Earn CAA Honors
- Seniors Antonio Bustamante and Ryder Bell led the way earning All-CAA First Team honors for the third and second-straight seasons, respectively, and classmate Marcel Berry was a second team selection for the fourth year in a row.
- Sophomore Sam Golan garnered All-CAA Third Team honors, while freshmen James Bradley and John Eberle were two of the 12 CAA All-Rookie Team picks.
- Bustamante is the fifth player in program history to earn first team honors on three occasions during his career, while both he and Berry joined a select list of nine Tribe players as four-time All-CAA selections.
- Bell was the 17th multi-time All-CAA First Team pick in program history, and along with Berry and Bustamante, is one of seven three-time all-league selections under head coach Chris Norris.
- The Tribe's two All-Rookie honorees were tied for the most in the league and brought the program's total to 18 under Norris. It marks the third time in the last four years that the Tribe placed multiple players on the all-rookie team and fifth time under Norris.
- Bustamante joined a group that includes Wade Barrett '98 (four), Steve Kokulis '90 (four), Jon Tuttle '89 (three) and Nathanial Baako '11 (three) as three-time All-CAA First Team picks.

Bell Named a Finalist for Senior CLASS Award
- Senior Ryder Bell was one of 10 men's soccer student-athletes from across the country to be named a finalist for the 2018 Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
- An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. 
- The finalists were chosen by a selection committee from the list of 30 candidates announced in September. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to help select the winner, and fans are encouraged to vote on the Senior CLASS Award website through Nov. 18, 2018. Fan votes will be combined with media and Division I head coaches' votes to determine the winner.
- The Senior CLASS Award winners will be announced during the 2018 NCAA Men's and Women's College Cup® championships later this fall.
- Bell is a two-time All-CAA selection, including first team honors last season, a two-time United Soccer Coaches All-Region Third Team selection and a three-time Virginia Sports Information Director's All-State Second Team selection. He ranks among the top 20 among active NCAA Division I players in points, goals and assists.
- An economics major with a minor in marketing, Bell became the 10th W&M men's soccer player to be named a Google Cloud/College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-American, earning third-team honors in 2017. He was named the 2018 winner of W&M's prestigious Bruce Davidson Memorial Scholarship.
- Within the Williamsburg community, Bell and the W&M soccer program have been heavily involved with Child Development Resources (CDR). CDR strives to inspire and empower children, families and early childhood professionals to reach their full potential, whatever their challenges, and serves approximately 1,200 children and their families each year. He has volunteered with CDR and tutored Math at Hornsby Middle School.

 In the Record Books
- Senior Antonio Bustamante moved into the Tribe's all-time top 10 in both points (85) and goals (34) this season.
- In W&M's 2-2 draw with Northeastern, Bustamante scored his 33rd career goal to move into 10th place on the program's career goals list.
- He is now just one away from ninth and two shy of fifth (four players currently tied for fifth with 36 goals) on the career list.
- In the Tribe's 3-2 win over Longwood on Sept. 11, the senior midfielder moved into 10th on the career points list. He current sits at No. 10 with 85 points (34 goals and 17) and trails ninth by two and eighth by three.   
- With his goal at Delaware on Oct. 13, Bustamante notched his eighth career game-winning goal, which ranks 12th in program history.

Difficult Schedule
- The Green and Gold's non-conference slate has been and continues to be a gauntlet. The Tribe's eight non-conference opponents have combined for a 65-47-14 record through Oct. 28
- Five of those eight nonconference foes were rated inside the RPI top 50, as of Oct. 28, including No. 4 North Carolina, No. 9 Virginia Tech, No. 32 NC State, No. 35 Coastal Carolina, and No. 46 Old Dominion.
- Including CAA foes, nine of the Tribe's 16 opponents are among the top 100, as of Oct. 28, including seven top-50 teams.
- Four CAA teams are currently in the RPI top 100, as of Oct. 28, including No. 20 UNCW, No. 40 James Madison, No. 85 Drexel and No. 94 Hofstra.
