Men's Soccer Welcomes State Rival JMU on Wednesday

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary men's soccer teams clashes with Colonial Athletic Association leader James Madison on Wednesday night at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field. The instate rivalry pits the reigning CAA Tournament champions W&M against the league's defending regular season winner JMU in a rematch of last season's conference semifinal. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. 
 
The first 100 students in attendance on Wednesday night will receive a FREE Tribe Soccer t-shirt. Fans can watch the match for FREE in HD online at Tribe Athletics TV.

Scouting the Tribe
- The Tribe moved to 0-1-2 in CAA play with a 2-2 draw against Northeastern on Saturday night. W&M led 1-0 on an Antonio Bustamante free kick in the 27th minute but needed a Ryder Bell goal in the 63rd to pull even after NU scored two goals 5:22 apart early in the second half. W&M sits at 2-6-2 overall on the season.
- Junior Reeves Trott, who has started the Tribe's last four matches, enjoyed his best appearance of the 2018 campaign with a goal and an assist against Old Dominion. It marked Trott's second career game with at least a goal and an assist.
- Sophomore Sam Golan recorded his first career assist on the equalizer in the second half at Old Dominion. He scored a goal earlier in the year to tie the match against Longwood.
- Redshirt senior goalkeeper Sam Onyeador, who missed all of last season due to injury, has started the Tribe's last two matches. He totaled three saves in the draw with Northeastern and two saves at ODU.
- Last week, the Tribe earned the United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award for the 2017-18 academic year. It marked the fifth-straight season and seventh overall that W&M earned the distinction. The Tribe was one of 97 DI teams to earn the honor, posting a team GPA of 3.29. Coupled with the women's soccer team earning the distinction, W&M was one of 65 DI programs to have both men's and women's programs honored.
- Bustamante leads the Tribe with 12 points on three goals and six assists. His assist total ranks 13th nationally, and he is seventh in the country in shots per game (4.3).
- Bustamante and Bell both rank among the NCAA Division I active leaders in points, goals and assists. Bustamante is fifth in career points (82), ninth in goals (33) and 23rd in assists (16), while Bell is 11th in points (74) and 16th in goals (28) and 18th in assists (18).
- Despite returning a veteran lineup, including 16 upperclassmen and eight starters back from 2017, the Tribe's freshman class has made an impact in 2018. Seven Green and Gold rookies have seen action this season, including six earning starting nods. In the Tribe's match with No. 24 Coastal Carolina, the Tribe's starting lineup featured four freshmen.
- The Green and Gold's non-conference slate has been and continues to be a gauntlet. The Tribe's eight non-conference opponents have combined for a 49-29-8 record through Oct. 8. Six of those eight foes are currently inside the RPI top 100, including No. 2 North Carolina, No. 15 Virginia Tech, No. 36 Coastal Carolina, No. 40 NC State, No. 95 Villanova and No. 96 Old Dominion. Including CAA foes, 12 of the Tribe's 16 opponents will be among the top 100, including six top-50 teams.
- Bustamante was one of 32 players named to the Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy Watch List on Aug. 9. A consensus All-American in 2017, he was named a preseason First Team All-American by Soccer America, Top Drawer Soccer and College Soccer News.
- W&M was selected as the preseason favorite to win the CAA for the second-straight year by vote of league coaches on Aug. 16. The Tribe was the unanimous selection, garnering the eight first-place votes from opposing coaches and tallying the maximum number of points with 64.
- Bustamante was named the preseason CAA Player of the Year for the second-straight season. He was joined on the 12-member preseason All-CAA team by Bell and senior Marcel Berry for the third year in a row.
 
Scouting James Madison
- James Madison enters the week at 6-3-2 and 4-1 in CAA action. The Dukes sit atop of the league table with 12 points and are 5-1-1 in their last seven matches.
- The Dukes are ranked No. 2 in the United Soccer Coaches Atlantic Region Rankings and received votes in the national poll on Tuesday.
- Last week, the Dukes played No. 17 NC State to a 0-0 draw in Raleigh on Oct. 2 and posted a 3-1 win over Charleston at home. JMU's lone loss over the last seven matches came to UNCW, 2-0, in Greensboro on Sept. 29.
- Senior Aaron Ward-Baptiste was named the CAA Player of the Week for the second time this season thanks to a goal and an assist against Charleston. He leads JMU with 12 points on five goals and two assists, including four goals with three game-winners in CAA play.
- Sophomore Carson Jeffris, senior Billy Metzler and junior Tim Estermann have scored three goals apiece for the Dukes, while juniors Manuel Ferriol and Niclas Mohr and sophomore Peik Koskinen lead the team with three assists each.
- Sophomore TJ Bush has played every minute in goal for JMU and owns a 0.68 GAA with 31 saves and five shutouts. Bush and the Dukes defense has only allowed three goals in five CAA matches.
 
Series History: W&M vs. JMU
- JMU leads the all-time series at 25-20-9, including a 9-8-4 mark in Williamsburg. The Tribe has actually outscored the Dukes over the 54-game series at 76-73.
- James Madison owns a 7-3-2 mark in the series over the last 12 contests.
- Ryder Bell has scored twice in four career games with James Madison.
- The team's split two meetings last season. the Dukes won 4-3 in Harrisonburg during the regular season, while W&M won the CAA Semifinals, 1-0, also in Harrisonburg.
- Reeves Trott scored the game-winner in the Tribe's 1-0 CAA Semifinal win, following up a rebound on a shot from Bell.
 
Playing Extra Time
- The Tribe has played six overtime matches in its first 10 contests of the season, including both matches last week at Old Dominion and home vs. Northeastern. W&M is 1-3-2 in extra time.
- The W&M school record for OT matches in a season is 10 set in 1998. The NCAA record is 14.
- The Green and Gold is one of 11 teams nationally to play six or more OT matches this season. The total ranks third in the country behind only Cal State Fullerton (8) and Holy Cross.
 
In the Record Books
- Senior Antonio Bustamante moved into the Tribe's all-time top 10 in both points (82) and goals (33) this season.
- In W&M's 2-2 draw with Northeastern, Bustamante scored his 33rd career goal to move into a tie for 10th on the program's list along with Rob Olsen (1977-80).
- He is now two away from ninth and three shy of fifth on the career list.
- In the Tribe's 3-2 win over Longwood on Sept. 11, the senior midfielder moved into 10th on the career points list. He current sits at No. 10 with 82 points (33 goals and 16) and trails ninth by five and eighth by six.  

Bell Named Senior CLASS Award Candidate 
- Senior Ryder Bell was one of 30 men's soccer student-athletes from across the country to be named a candidate for the 2018 Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
- Bell is a two-time All-CAA selection, including first team honors last season, a two-time United Soccer Coaches All-Region Third Team selection and a three-time Virginia Sports Information Director's All-State Second Team selection. He ranks among the top 20 among active NCAA Division I players in points, goals and assists.
- An economics major with a minor in marketing, Bell became the 10th W&M men's soccer player to be named a Google Cloud/College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-American, earning third-team honors in 2017. He was named the 2018 winner of W&M's prestigious Bruce Davidson Memorial Scholarship.
- Within the Williamsburg community, Bell and the W&M soccer program have been heavily involved with Child Development Resources (CDR). CDR strives to inspire and empower children, families and early childhood professionals to reach their full potential, whatever their challenges, and serves approximately 1,200 children and their families each year. He has volunteered with CDR and tutored Math at Hornsby Middle School.
