Men's Soccer Hosts Northeastern on Saturday Night

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary men's soccer team returns to Colonial Athletic Association play when it welcomes Northeastern to Williamsburg on Saturday night. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. from Martin Family Stadium.
 
Fans can receive a discounted $3 ticket to the game with a ticket stub from Saturday's Tribe football game against Albany, which kicks at 3:30 p.m. The game will be available for FREE in HD online at Tribe Athletics TV.

Scouting the Tribe
- The Tribe suffered a 3-2 overtime setback at Old Dominion on Wednesday night, falling to 2-6-1 on the year. W&M took a 1-0 lead on a senior Antonio Bustamante goal in the sixth minute, but needed an 85th-minute goal from junior Reeves Trott to force extra time. The Monarchs scored the game-winner on a header off a corner kick in the 97th minute.
- W&M is 0-1-1 in CAA play after playing a pair of league matches last week. The Tribe played Elon to a 1-1 draw on Sept. 26 thanks to a Devin McCarthy goal in the 45th minute, before falling at Hofstra, 4-0, on Sept. 29.
- Including Wednesday's match at Old Dominion, the Tribe has played five OT contests in it nine matches on the year. W&M is 1-3-1 in those contests with all three setbacks coming on the road (NC State, Villanova and Old Dominion).
- Junior Reeves Trott, who has started the Tribe's last three matches, enjoyed his best match of the 2018 campaign with a goal and an assist against Old Dominion. It marked Trott's second career game with at least a goal and an assist.
- Sophomore Sam Golan recorded his first career assist on the equalizer in the second half at Old Dominion. He enjoyed a strong match along the back line, registering a defensive save as well.
- Senior Antonio Bustamante tallied his second goal of the year at ODU and the 32nd of his W&M career. He is only one goal away from 10th on the Tribe's career list. Bustamante has 80 career points (32 goals and 16 assists) which ranks 10th in program history.
- Redshirt senior goalkeeper Sam Onyeador, who missed all of last season due to injury, made his first start since 2015 at Old Dominion. He totaled two saves against the Monarch. Onyeador made his season debut in the second half at Hofstra and notched two saves.
- On Thursday, the Tribe earned the United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award for the 2017-18 academic year. It marked the fifth-straight season and seventh overall that W&M earned the distinction. The Tribe was one of 97 DI teams to earn the honor, posting a team GPA of 3.29. Coupled with the women's soccer team earning the distinction, W&M was one of 65 DI programs to have both men's and women's programs honored.
- Bustamante leads the Tribe with 10 points on two goals and six assists. His assist total ranks 10th nationally.
- Senior Ryder Bell leads the Tribe with four goals. He ranks 29th nationally in goals per game (0.67), but has missed W&M's last three matches due to injury.
- Bustamante and Bell both rank among the NCAA Division I active leaders in points, goals and assists. Bustamante is fifth in career points (80), ninth in goals (32) and 23rd in assists (16), while Bell is 11th in points (72) and 16th in goals (27) and 18th in assists (18).
- Despite returning a veteran lineup, including 16 upperclassmen and eight starters back from 2017, the Tribe's freshman class has made an impact in 2018. Seven Green and Gold rookies have seen action this season, including six earning starting nods. In the Tribe's match with No. 24 Coastal Carolina, the Tribe's starting lineup featured four freshmen.
- The Green and Gold's non-conference slate has been and continues to be a gauntlet. The Tribe's eight non-conference opponents have combined to amassing a 45-25-8 record through Oct. 1. Five of those eight foes are currently inside the RPI top 100, including No. 4 North Carolina, No. 7 Virginia Tech, No. 18 NC State, No. 33 Coastal Carolina and No. 81 Villanova.
- Bustamante was one of 32 players named to the Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy Watch List on Aug. 9. A consensus All-American in 2017, he was named a preseason First Team All-American by Soccer America, Top Drawer Soccer and College Soccer News.
- W&M was selected as the preseason favorite to win the CAA for the second-straight year by vote of league coaches on Aug. 16. The Tribe was the unanimous selection, garnering the eight first-place votes from opposing coaches and tallying the maximum number of points with 64.
- Bustamante was named the preseason CAA Player of the Year for the second-straight season. He was joined on the 12-member preseason All-CAA team by Bell and senior Marcel Berry for the third year in a row.
 
Scouting Northeastern
- The Huskies enter the weekend match with the Tribe at 3-5 on the year, including a 1-1 CAA mark. NU is winless on the road at 0-4 this season.
- Northeastern, who had its last match against Hartford on Tuesday postponed, is coming off a 1-0 OT win over Elon at home on Sept. 29. Alec Supinski tallied the winner in the 94th minute. NU suffered a 1-0 setback at JMU in its other league match.
- Freshman Ryan Massoud, who was named the CAA Rookie of the Week earlier this season, leads NU with four goals on the year. He scored four times in his first four matches, including two in a 3-0 win over Niagara in the season opener.
- Sophomore Adama Kaba and senior Harry Swartz lead the Huskies with two assists apiece.
- In goal, sophomore Noah Abrams has started seven of the Huskies' eight matches and possesses a goals against average of 1.05 with 21 saves and two shutouts. Freshman Chandler Cree has appeared in two matches in goal and played the final 66 minutes, making four saves to earn the win over Elon.
 
Series History: W&M vs. Northeastern
- The Tribe leads the all-time series at 8-2-4 overall, including a 5-0-2 margin in Williamsburg. The Green and Gold hold a 27-14 advantage in scoring in the 14 previous meetings. W&M has won four of the last five contests between the teams.
- Last season, the Tribe scored four first-half goals in a 4-1 win in Boston. Antonio Bustamante tallied a goal and three assists in the win, while Reeves Trott and Ryder Bell both found the back of the net as well.
- In the last meeting in Williamsburg, W&M rolled to a 7-1 victory over the Huskies. Antonio Bustamante notched a hat trick and added an assist, while both Ryder Bell and Marcel Berry scored two goals apiece.
- In two career matches vs. NU, Bustamante has four goals and four assists, while Bell owns three goals and two assists in three career contests against the Huskies.
 
Norris Named W&M Alumni Association Coach of the Year
- Head coach Chris Norris was named the W&M Alumni Association Coach of the Year at the Fall Awards Banquet.
- Norris, who is in his 15th season as the program's head man, guided W&M to its eighth Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championship and 16th NCAA Tournament appearance last season. He was also named the VaSID State Coach of the Year for his efforts.
- It marked the third time that Norris has earned the Alumni Association honor, which is tied for the most with long-time head football coach Jimmye Laycock. Norris took home the honor in 2009 and 2011 as well.
 
Bell Named Senior CLASS Award Candidate 
- Senior Ryder Bell was one of 30 men's soccer student-athletes from across the country to be named a candidate for the 2018 Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
- Bell is a two-time All-CAA selection, including first team honors last season, a two-time United Soccer Coaches All-Region Third Team selection and a three-time Virginia Sports Information Director's All-State Second Team selection. He ranks among the top 20 among active NCAA Division I players in points, goals and assists.
- An economics major with a minor in marketing, Bell became the 10th W&M men's soccer player to be named a Google Cloud/College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-American, earning third-team honors in 2017. He was named the 2018 winner of W&M's prestigious Bruce Davidson Memorial Scholarship.
- Within the Williamsburg community, Bell and the W&M soccer program have been heavily involved with Child Development Resources (CDR). CDR strives to inspire and empower children, families and early childhood professionals to reach their full potential, whatever their challenges, and serves approximately 1,200 children and their families each year. He has volunteered with CDR and tutored Math at Hornsby Middle School.
