The William & Mary men's swimming team dominated the final relay to complete a come-from-behind victory for the second day in a row, downing UMBC 150.5-143.5 on Saturday in Baltimore. With the win, the Tribe improved to 3-2 on the year, while the Retrievers fell to 2-2 overall.
Similar to Friday against Towson, W&M entered the 400 free relay today down two points, and needing a win to claim the meet. And also just like Friday, the relay team delivered, swimming 3:03.91 to break the UMBC pool record and win the event. Junior
Colin Wright (Williamsburg, Va.) turned in his best performance of the night to lead-off the relay in 45.13, breaking W&M's dual-meet record of 45.16 that was set by
Joe Eiden '17 back in 2016, and coming within .02 of breaking the pool record that was set by 23-time Olympic Gold Medalist Michael Phelps, back in 2004. Behind Wright's lead-off, senior
Eric Grimes (Louisville, Ky.) and juniors
Jack Doherty (Middletown, Conn.) and
Ian Thompson (Alexandria, Va.) all out-split their opponents to extend the Tribe's advantage into the final wall.
Wright also won two individual events, sweeping the 50 free in 20.80 and the 100 free in 45.26 for the second day and fourth meet in a row. Doherty added an individual win of his own in the 100 fly, touching the wall in 50.68 seconds, and freshman
Steven Thalblum (Ashburn, Va.) swam 1:53.40 in the 200 IM to finish in a tie for first place. The Tribe also had two other men win a pair of races each. Junior
Chris Balbo (Short Hills, N.J.) took the 200 fly in 1:51.61 before coming back to win the 500 free in 4:37.72, and sophomore
Devin McNulty (Herndon, Va.) swept the two breaststroke events, swimming 57.45 to win the 100 and 2:07.65 to take the 200.
After a long weekend of swimming, William & Mary has the next week off before returning to action on Nov. 3-4 at the CAA Pod Meet. The meet this year will include Delaware and UNCW, and will be hosted by the Blue Hens in Newark, Del.
