Men's Soccer Wraps Up Road Swing at ODU on Wednesday Night

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary men's soccer team wraps up a three-match road swing as it continues its difficult non-conference slate at Old Dominion on Wednesday. The former CAA rivals meet for the first time since 2014 and the game will be broadcast on beIN SPORTS.  
 
The game will be broadcast on beIN SPORTS both online and via a linear broadcast, which starts at 7:30 p.m. The beIN SPORTS Connect app is available on beIN's website, the Google Play Store and the Apple Store. beIN Sports is available in Hampton Roads on Cox (183 / 1183 HD) and online at https://connect.beinsports.com/us/.

Scouting the Tribe 
- The Tribe is coming off a 4-0 setback on Hofstra on Saturday. The Green and Gold played Elon to a 1-1 draw in North Carolina to open CAA play on Sept. 26. W&M is 2-5-1 overall and 0-1-1 in league action.
- Against Elon, freshman Devin McCarthy gave the Tribe the lead, scoring with 10 seconds remaining in the first half. Redshirt freshman Derin Kokuuslu won the ball in the midfield, before rookie Zachary Hosseinian broke free down the middle of the pitch and led McCarthy into the box. He was able to get a boot to the ball and chip it over top of the Elon goalkeeper.
- The goal was the first of McCarthy's career, and the assist was Hosseinian's first career helper.
- The Green and Gold's non-conference slate has been and continues to be a gauntlet. The Tribe's eight non-conference opponents have combined to amassing a 43-23-6 record through Oct. 1. Five of those eight foes are currently inside the RPI top 100, including No. 4 North Carolina, No. 7 Virginia Tech, No. 18 NC State, No. 33 Coastal Carolina and No. 81 Villanova.
- In the win over Longwood on Sept. 11, senior Antonio Bustamante scored the game-winner in the 109th minute on a free kick. He finished with a goal and an assist to move into 10th place on the Tribe's career points list with 78. Bustamante is just two goals away from 10th on that career list. He ranks ninth in the country with six assists on the year.
- Bustamante and senior Ryder Bell both rank among the NCAA Division I active leaders in points, goals and assists. Bustamante is sixth in career points, ninth in goals and 23rd in assists (16), while Bell, who leads W&M with four goals on the year, is 11th in points (72) and 16th in goals (27) and 17th in assists (18).
- Bell, who has missed the Tribe's last two matches due to injury, leads W&M with four goals on the year and is 30th nationally in goals per game (0.67).
- Bustamante was one of 32 players named to the Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy Watch List on Aug. 9. A consensus All-American in 2017, he was named a preseason First Team All-American by Soccer America, Top Drawer Soccer and College Soccer News.
- W&M was selected as the preseason favorite to win the CAA for the second-straight year by vote of league coaches on Aug. 16. The Tribe was the unanimous selection, garnering the eight first-place votes from opposing coaches and tallying the maximum number of points with 64.
- Bustamante was named the preseason CAA Player of the Year for the second-straight season. He was joined on the 12-member preseason All-CAA team by Bell and senior Marcel Berry for the third year in a row.
 
Scouting Old Dominion
- Old Dominion is 5-3-1 on the year, including a 4-1-1 mark at home.
- ODU is ranked No. 7 in the United Soccer Coaches Southeast Region.
- The Monarchs are 3-1 in Conference USA after suffering its first league loss at Marshall, 4-2, on Saturday.
- ODU has allowed four goals in two of its last three matches, including a 4-0 loss at VCU on Sept. 19.
- Included the Monarchs recent victories are C-USA wins over Charlotte (2-1), at New Mexico (2-1) and vs. South Carolina (1-0).
- Senior Max Wilschrey owns eight of the Monarchs' 13 goals on the year. Four of those markers have been game-winners. He has equaled his goal total from last season and was a Third Team All-Conference USA selection last season.
- Freshman Daniel Corona is the only other ODU player with multiple goals and he has two on the year, including a tallying at Marshall.
- Senior Niko Klosterhalfen ranks second on team with eight points, including a team-high six assists.
- Junior Mertcan Akar, who was the 2017 C-USA Golden Glove winner as the league's top goalkeeper, has played every minute for ODU with a 1.41 GAA, 18 saves and three shutouts.
 
Series History: W&M vs. Old Dominion
- The teams will meet in the regular season for the first time since the Monarchs topped the Tribe 1-0 in Williamsburg during the 2014 campaign.
- W&M holds a 23-21-8 advantage in the all-times series with ODU, including a 10-9-4 cushion in Norfolk.
- The Tribe has outscored Old Dominion 81-64 in the 52 all-time meetings.
- The Green and Gold picked up a 4-0 win over Old Dominion in the most recent meeting in Norfolk during the 2013 season.
- W&M and ODU played to draws in exhibition competition in both 2015 (2-2) and 2016 (3-3).
 
Norris Named W&M Alumni Association Coach of the Year
- Head coach Chris Norris was named the W&M Alumni Association Coach of the Year at the Fall Awards Banquet.
- Norris, who is in his 15th season as the program's head man, guided W&M to its eighth Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championship and 16th NCAA Tournament appearance last season. He was also named the VaSID State Coach of the Year for his efforts.
- It marked the third time that Norris has earned the Alumni Association honor, which is tied for the most with long-time head football coach Jimmye Laycock. Norris took home the honor in 2009 and 2011 as well.
 
Bell Named Senior CLASS Award Candidate
 
- Senior Ryder Bell was one of 30 men's soccer student-athletes from across the country to be named a candidate for the 2018 Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
- Bell is a two-time All-CAA selection, including first team honors last season, a two-time United Soccer Coaches All-Region Third Team selection and a three-time Virginia Sports Information Director's All-State Second Team selection. He ranks among the top 20 among active NCAA Division I players in points, goals and assists.
- An economics major with a minor in marketing, Bell became the 10th W&M men's soccer player to be named a Google Cloud/College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-American, earning third-team honors in 2017. He was named the 2018 winner of W&M's prestigious Bruce Davidson Memorial Scholarship.
- Within the Williamsburg community, Bell and the W&M soccer program have been heavily involved with Child Development Resources (CDR). CDR strives to inspire and empower children, families and early childhood professionals to reach their full potential, whatever their challenges, and serves approximately 1,200 children and their families each year. He has volunteered with CDR and tutored Math at Hornsby Middle School.
 
Youth is Served
- Despite returning a veteran lineup, including 16 upperclassmen and eight starters back from 2017, the Tribe's freshman class has made an impact in 2018. Seven Green and Gold rookies have seen action this season, including six earning starting nods.
- Freshman goalkeeper Connor Andrews started all eight matches for W&M. He posted a shutout with four saves in the opener against Saint Joseph's. In the Tribe's double OT setback at No. 4 NC State, Andrews made four saves, including a 1-on-1 breakaway in the 10th minute and denying a penalty kick in the 39th minute.
- In the Tribe's match with No. 24 Coastal Carolina, the Tribe's starting lineup featured four freshmen. Along with Andrews in goal, freshman John Eberle received his second start, while rookies Devin McCarthy and Zachary Hosseinian earned their first career starting nods.
- Redshirt freshman midfielder Derin Kokuuslu has started five of his eight appearances, while true freshman James Bradley has appeared in seven matches with three starts, including the CAA opener at Elon.
- McCarthy and John Andrew Eskay registered their first career points and made an impact in the Tribe's 3-2 win over Longwood. McCarthy, who made his first career appearance, assisted on W&M's first goal, and Eskay assisted on the equalizer thanks to a nice run down the left flank.
- In the CAA-opening draw at Elon, McCarthy scored his first career goal, while Hosseinian assisted on the marker. It was Hosseinian's first career assist as well.
