WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary baseball team dropped a 13-6 decision to UMass Lowell on Thursday afternoon at Plumeri Park. With the decision, the Tribe falls to 9-7, while the River Hawks improve to 8-6.
Seniors
Ryder Miconi and
Charles Ameer led the offensive charge with two hits apiece. Ameer and freshman
Matthew Trehub also drove in two runs for the Green and Gold.
UMass Lowell jumped out to an early lead with some small ball in the top of the second inning. Austin Young led off the inning with a check-swing single to left, before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt. Russ Olive followed with a single through the right side, giving the River Hawks a 1-0 lead.
William & Mary took a brief lead with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Sophomore
Kyle Wrighte led off the inning with a single, before moving to third when junior
Ryan Hall singled and reached on an error. The next batter,
Brandon Raquet singled off of the pitcher, loading the bases. Junior
Cullen Large followed with a sacrifice fly, tying the score. With two outs, Trehub singled into right, giving W&M 3-1 lead.
However, the River Hawks responded with a six run two-out fourth inning rally. Austin Young started the rally again with a single, before Colby Maiola doubled to left putting runners on second and third. After a walk loaded the bases, John Polichetti singled into center tying the scorer. Ben Prada provided the biggest blow of the inning when he homered over the right field wall, making it 7-3.
UMass Lowell extended its lead with a run in the top of the sixth inning. Michael Young led off the frame with a double, before moving to third on a wild pitch. With one out and runners on the corners, Omar Marchena grounded out, but it was enough to plate Michael Young.
Another two-out rally extended the River Hawks' lead to six runs in the top of the seventh inning. With two-outs, Olive drew a walk setting the table. John Polichetti followed with a double into the right center field gap that scored Olive and made it 9-3.
For the second time of the game, W&M scratched across three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Brandon Raquet reached with two-outs on a fielder's choice, before Large reached after he was hit. Senior
Ryder Miconi, followed with a double to right center field scoring the first run of the inning. The next batter, Ameer singled off of the first base bag clearing the bases and cutting the lead to 9-6.
Two home runs in the ninth inning gave UMass Lowell its largest lead of the game. With one out, Austin Young hit a solo shot over the right field wall. The River Hawks restarted the rally by sandwiching a hit by Maiola and a walk by Polichetti around an out. With two outs, Michael Young bounced a homer off the top of the right field wall, to make it 13-7.
Senior
Daniel Powers was saddled with his second loss of the season. He tossed four innings allowing seven runs on eight hits, while striking out five.
Steve Xirinachs was credited for the win for the River Hawks. He tossed five innings allowing three runs on seven hits with two strikeouts. Offensively, Austin Young led the charge with four hits. Michael Young had four RBI, while Prada and Polichetti each had three.
The Green and Gold return to action tomorrow, Friday, March 17, when they open a three-game series against Rhode Island. First-pitch is set for 6 p.m.
