WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Junior
Ryan Hall collected five hits as the William & Mary offense exploded for 11 runs and a season-high 16 hits as they topped Rhode Island 11-2 on Friday night at Plumeri Park in the series lid-lifter. With the win the Tribe improves 10-7, while the Rams fall to 6-9.
Hall tied the second most hits in single-game school history with his 5-for-5 performance. He added two RBI and three runs scored. Junior
Cullen Large (3-for-5) and sophomore
Hunter Smith (2-for-4) also had multi-hit games for the Tribe offense.
Rhode Island jumped on the board with a run in the top of the third inning. Laurence Hill recorded the Rams first hit of the night, before stealing second. After two outs, Chris Hess singled through the left side bringing home the game's first run.
William & Mary rallied back and took the lead in the home half of the inning. With one out, Hall and Large recorded back-to-back singles. After the second out, Smith singled up the middle, tying the score. Junior
Charles Ameer loaded the bases when he was hit by a pitch. Freshman
Brandon Raquet put the Tribe on top with a two-RBI single to right, making the score 3-1.
The Tribe tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Freshman
Matthew Trehub led off the inning with a single, before sophomore
Kyle Wrighte moved him to third with a bunt single. The rally continued as Hall singled into right scoring the inning's first run. Large followed suit with a single that loaded the bases, before senior
Ryder Miconi got an RBI for reaching on an walk and making the score 6-1.
W&M continued to tack on runs with two more in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Tribe did all the damage with two outs. Wrighte started the rally with a single, before Hall doubled scoring Wrighte all the way from first. The next batter, Large, tripled into the left center field gap, giving W&M an 8-1 lead.
URI got back on the scoreboard with a run in the top of the seventh inning. Hill led off the inning with walk, before moving around the bases on a wild pitch and passed ball. With two outs, Hess singled bringing home Hill for the second time on the night.
The Tribe came right back and added another run in the bottom of the inning. Trehub started the inning by reaching second on an error. The next batter, Wrighte doubled off of the left field wall to make it 9-2.
W&M continued the run parade with two more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Miconi led off the inning with a single, before moving around the bases on two passed balls. The next batter, Smith, singled through the right side for the run. Ameer followed by getting hit by a pitch, while
Brandon Raquet walked, loading the bases. Freshman
Patrick Ryan drove in the Tribe's final run on a fielder's choice.
Senior
Nick Brown earned his second win of the season as he tossed six innings. He allowed just one run on four hits, while fanning four Rams. Redshirt freshman
Chris Farrell had two innings of relief allowing one run on two hits, with a pair of strikeouts. Senior
John Yoest pitched the ninth surrendering a pair of walks.
Nick Johnson was saddled with his second loss for URI, throwing four innings. He allowed six runs on nine hits, and had five strikeouts. Offensively Hess and O'Neil had two hits, while Hess drove in both Ram runs.
The Tribe and Rams continue their three-game set tomorrow, Saturday, March 18. First pitch has been moved to 1 p.m due to forecast of rain. The final game of the series is set for Sunday, March 19 at 1 p.m.
