Box Score Despite a late charge up field and a strong defensive effort, the No. 18 William & Mary field hockey team fell on the road at No. 11 Delaware Friday night, 3-1. The Tribe moved to 11-5 on the year and 3-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association, while the Blue Hens improved to 11-4 on the year and 3-0 in conference play.
After sophomore
Woodard Hooper (Reston, Va.) had an early charge and shot saved for W&M, the Blue Hens got on the board first, scoring off a tipped corner early in the seventh minute, then adding a second in the 18th minute. That second goal came on the third shot out of a corner, after sophomore goalkeeper
Morgan Connor (Bedford, N.Y.) made one save and senior captain
Erin Menges (Richmond, Va.) another on the first two attempts. The Tribe defense and upfield play stiffened from there, generating three penalty corners and two more shots in the final 10 minutes of the half.
The second half opened with more back-and-forth play, with both sides generating chances. In the 43rd minute, Delaware was awarded another corner, but the shot was stopped by sophomore defender
Cassidy Goodwin (Gloucester, Va.). The Blue Hens broke through again in the 53rd minute, scoring on a 4v2 breakaway, and had another corner chance in the 56th minute but Connor was there for the save.
In the final seven minutes, the Tribe's increasing pressure finally took its toll. Senior
Cammie Lloyd (Midlothian, Va.) cracked a high shot in the 65th minute that was gloved away by the Delaware goalkeeper, and in the 67th,
Estelle Hughes (Newcastle, NSW) took a clever arcing shot that got over the keeper, but a Delaware defender was there to make a stick save in midair and slap the ball out of bounds. Out of the restart from that, Hughes took the ball across the top of the scoring area, and fired a shot that slid under the goalkeeper and in to set the final margin at 3-1.
