No. 18 W&M Field Hockey Heads to No. 11 Delaware, Drexel for Key Weekend Games

The No. 18 William & Mary field hockey team enters the final two weeks of the regular season in the thick of the hunt for both the Colonial Athletic Association regular-season championship and a bid to the NCAA Tournament.  The Tribe will have two big road tests this weekend, playing at No. 11 and defending NCAA Champions Delaware on Friday night at 7 p.m., before continuing on to face Drexel on Sunday at noon in Philadelphia.  Live Stats and live video for both matches are available on TribeAthletics.com.

Scouting the Tribe
W&M moved back up to No. 18 in the polls this week, after picking up a big 3-2 road win at Old Dominion Sunday to improve to 11-4 overall.  In the season stats, senior Cammie Lloyd (Midlothian, Va.) continues to hold a one-point lead on classmate Emma MacLeod (Richmond, Va.), with 22 points for Lloyd (9g,4a) and 21 for MacLeod (9g,3a).  On defense, captain Erin Menges (Richmond, Va.) had her league-leading fifth defensive save of the season on Sunday, and sophomore Morgan Connor (Bedford, Va.) added four more saves for a season-total 70, on a .745 save percentage and a 1.72 GAA.

Scouting the Blue Hens
Delaware is 10-4 overall, 2-0 in the CAA, and ranked No. 11 in the country after splitting a pair of matches last weekend.  The Blue Hens fell to No. 21 St. Joseph's on the road, 2-1, on Saturday before rebounding with an 8-1 win over Columbia Sunday.  Last year's Honda Award winner, Greta Nauck, is once again leading Delaware and the CAA with 36 points on 16 goals and four assists, while Taylor Lister ranks among the national leaders with 16 assists (5g, 26 pts) as well.  On defense, Emmeline Oltmans has seen the majority of the action in cage with a 1.94 GAA and 38 saves, on a .679 percentage.  Kiki Bink also has four defensive saves to lead the back line and rank second in the CAA.

Scouting the Dragons
Drexel enters the weekend at 5-10 overall and 0-2 in the CAA, but will face Towson on Friday before hosting W&M.  The Dragons most recently have lost three straight to ranked teams in No. 16 James Madison, No. 3 Virginia, and No. 7 Syracuse last weekend.  Offensively, Tess Horan and Tess Bernheimer are tied for the team lead with 10 points apiece, coming on identical lines of four goals and two assists.  On defense, Erin Gilchrist has played every minute in goal with a 3.05 GAA and 122 saves on a .722 save percentage.

The Series
- W&M is 8-14 all-time against Delaware, with the Blue Hens currently riding a seven-game winning streak that includes four-straight CAA titles.  Last year, the game was 3-2 overtime thriller in Williamsburg.  W&M's last win on the road in the series came back in 2004, another 3-2 win.
- The Tribe leads the series with Drexel, 9-8, following a 2-1 victory at home last season and wins in two of the last three years.  The last time the Tribe won in Philadelphia was alls the way back in 2005, a 1-0 decision that year.

News and Notes
- Melanie Strik (Den Haag, The Netherlands) was named the CAA Rookie of the Week on Oct. 17, after scoring her second goal of the season against Old Dominion.

- The Tribe's 3-2 win at ODU on Oct. 15 was the first road win for W&M in the series since 1977.  The Tribe also scored three goals against the Lady Monarchs for the first time since 2009, and just the third time (also in 1980) since a 4-0 win in the 1979 season.

- Emma MacLeod was named to the NFHCA Senior Game on Wednesday, one of just 38 players nationally to be chosen for the all-star event on Saturday, Nov. 18.  She's one of just three players from the CAA to be asked to attend, alongisde Northeastern's Jamie Bartucca and JMU's Hannah Hall.

- W&M is 3-0 in the CAA for the first time since 2005, and just the third time ever.  The Tribe started perfect in 2004, going on to win the regular season at 7-0.

- MacLeod's four-goal game against Hofstra was one of just seven such games in the entire country this season so far

- Sophomore Woodard Hooper (Reston, Va.) scored the game-winner against Davidson, and now has four on the year, best in the CAA and tied for third-most in the country.

- MacLeod is the first W&M player since Ann Ekberg '03 in 2002 to win CAA Player of the Week honors in consecutive weeks.  Now with three Player of the Week nods in her career, MacLeod is also tied for the all-time program record alongside Ekberg, Kelly Giles '06, and her classmate Lloyd.

- W&M's 8-0 win over La Salle broke the school record for points in a game, with 24 (8g,8a).  The previous record was 23 points (9g,5a) set in 1990 against Lehigh.  The game also saw W&M's second-most assists ever (8), t-3rd-most goals (8), and t-8th-most shots (40).

- W&M has had a player score two assists in a game eight times already this season, including back-to-back games against Old Dominion and Davidson by sophomore Cassidy Goodwin (Gloucester, Va.).  That is tied for 10th-most in a single game in school history, along with double-helpers by Estelle Hughes (Newcastle, NSW), MacLeod, Annie Snead (Midlothian, Va.) and Menges against La Salle, Christie van de Kamp (Midlothian, Va.) against Pacific, and Booter Ellis (Delmar, Del.) against Fairfield.

- Woodard Hooper was named CAA Player of the Week on Sept. 12, after scoring two goals including the game-winner against No. 7 Michigan.

- In addition to Connor, Meredith Clay (Charlotte, N.C.) and Jessica Wiggins (Williamsburg, Va.) have both seen time in goal this season.  This is only the fifth year that W&M has had three or more goalkeepers see playing time, joining 2013, 2012, 1998, and 1995.

- W&M's No. 18 ranking in Weeks 2, 3, 5, and 7 are the highest for the Tribe since reaching No. 17 midway through the 2006 season.  Since 1993, the highest W&M has been ranked in the coaches poll was ninth, in the second poll of the 2000 season.

- Three of the Tribe's four losses have come against top-10 ranked teams.

- The W&M defense made three defensive saves in the loss to Boston College, its best total since making four against Old Dominion back in 2005.  Cassidy Goodwin made two stops and Katherine Hull (Fredericksburg, Va.) one, all to preserve what was then a 0-0 deadlock.

- Connor made 14 saves against Boston College, beating her previous career high by three saves.  That was the most saves in a single game by a Tribe goalkeeper since the 2009 season, and combined with the three defensive saves, W&M's 17 total stops were the most for a single game since 2002.

- With both UC Davis and Pacific on the schedule, this the first year since 1985 that W&M will play multiple West Coast teams in the same year.  Back then, it was San Jose State (who no longer has a team) and Stanford who had the honors.  Currently, there are only four West Coast field hockey teams in the NCAA - UC Davis, Pacific, Stanford, and California.

- Tribe players had an outstanding summer on the Team USA circuit, with six players being invited to the YWNC, and five of those earning an invitation onwards to the Team USA selection camps.  Erin Menges was named to the National Developmental Squad, while Christie van de Kamp was chosen for the U21 National Team and Annie Snead was named an alternate to the U21 team as well.

- At the conclusion of spring training, the team selected Erin Menges and Katelyn Rennyson (Centreville, Va.) as team captains.
