The William & Mary swimming team cruised past Davidson on the road Saturday, winning 12 of the 16 events (including the final nine in a row) to claim victory, 181-107. The Tribe improved to 6-3 on the year, and clinched a program-record sixth-straight winning season.
The freshmen line-up led the way against the Wildcats, with Tribe rookies winning six individual events and contributing on both relays. The winners included
Colin Wright (Williamsburg, Va.), who took the 50 free in 21 seconds flat and also teamed with
Kyle Neri (Wallingford, Conn.),
Joe Eiden (White Plains, N.Y.), and
Alex Henderson (Hopewell, Va.) to win the 400 free relay in 3:04.00. Distance standout
Chris Balbo (Short Hills, N.J.) won both the 1000 free and the 200 breast, in 9:36.19 and 2:10.14, respectively, while
Colin Demers (Virginia Beach, Va.) won the 100 back in 51.27 seconds.
Jack Doherty (Middletown, Conn.) took top honors in the 100 free in 46.63 seconds, and
Ian Bidwell (Pelham, N.Y.) stopped the clock in 4:42.76 to win the 500 free.
Also finishing atop the podium was the 200 medley relay of
Wyatt Grubb (Mechanicsville, Va.),
Alex Montes de Oca (Orange, Va.), Doherty, and Eiden, who timed 1:32.98 for gold. Senior
Sean Higgins (Wilton, Conn.) was the winner in the 200 fly in 1:52.76, and Montes took top honors in the 200 IM in 1:53.78. Sophomore
Joey Rento (Newport News, Va.) hit the wall first in the 200 back in 1:53.09, and junior
Tommy Kealy (Wilton, Conn.) rounded out the winners in 50.55 seconds to beat all in the 100 fly.
William & Mary brings its regular-season to a close next Saturday at 12 p.m., hosting VMI at the Rec Center Pool. Before the first relay, the Tribe will take a moment to honor its senior class.
