Phil Breno and the W&M defense recorded its second consecutive shutout as the William & Mary men's soccer team blanked Longwood 2-0 at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field Tuesday night. With the win, the Tribe improves to 3-1, while the Lancers fall to 1-1-1.
It is the third consecutive win for W&M after falling to George Washington in the season opener. Breno, who was credited with his second consecutive shutout, and the Tribe defense have now gone 196 minutes without allowing a goal dating back to the Coastal Carolina match.
Both teams traded early chances with each team firing two shots apiece. Mo Jalloh fired both of the Lancers shots and each were blocked by a Tribe defender. Off of a corner sophomore
Ryder Bell just missed wide for the Tribe, while junior
William Eskay had his shot saved by Longwood's Carlos Canas.
W&M broke through with the match's first tally in the 28th minute. Sophomore
Antonio Bustamante fed a pass through the Lancers backline for Maw. The senior sprinted around the defense and fired his shot from the left side passed the keeper into the right side of the net. With Maw's first tally of the season, the Tribe has scored first in all four of its contests this season.
The Tribe doubled its lead thanks to some nice passing in the 60th minute. Eskay brought the ball across midfield and sent a pass to the left wing finding Bell. Bell sent a cross into the middle of the box that found a streaking
Antonio Bustamante, who one-timed it home. The sophomore's second goal in as many games made the score 2-0 W&M.
Longwood mounted some pressure looking to get back in the game with a pair shots in the 65th and 66th minute. Michale Margulis turned a shot on target that had to be saved by Breno, before Daniel Campos pushed one high.
W&M just missed its third goal of the evening and
Antonio Bustamante just missed his second in the 71st minute. From the middle of the pitch, freshman
Reeves Trott found
Antonio Bustamante on the right side. He drove towards the keeper and uncorked his chance but it had to be saved by Canas.
The Lancers continued to search for their first goal, and had two more chances that were stoned by Breno. Off of a corner kick, Jalloh turned a shot on target that Breno was able to grab. Moments later off of a counter attack, Finley Wyatt was able to make space and fire from the top of the penalty area, but Breno made the stop.
W&M finished with a 15-11 advantage in shots, including a 6-3 lead in shot on-goal. Breno came up with three saves for W&M. Offensively,
Antonio Bustamante led the charge with three shots.
The Green and Gold concludes its stretch of three straight Big South matches as it travels to Campbell on Saturday, Sept. 10. Kickoff between the Tribe and the Camels is set for 7 p.m.
