LYNCHBURG, Va. – Freshman
Reeves Trott and sophomore
Antonio Bustamante goals four minutes apart in the second half helped the William & Mary men's soccer team to 2-0 victory at Liberty in Lynchburg on Friday night. Redshirt junior goalie
Phil Breno recorded his first W&M shutout, making a save. With the victory, the Tribe improves to 2-1, while the Flames fall to 2-1.
"We are happy to get a result and a shutout tonight," W&M head coach
Chris Norris said. "Liberty did a great job of disrupting us in the first half, but we regrouped well and were sharper in the second half."
The first half was a back-and-forth affair as both sides duked it out for control of the possession. However, Liberty had two of the three combined shots in the period. Tresor Mbuyu took the first shot of the match in the seventh minute that sailed high, before Breno had to save a shot from Kevin Mendoza in the 14th minute.
W&M's lone chance came in the 37th minute. After the Tribe built up some momentum, Trott gained some space and uncorked a shot that had to be saved by Liberty goalkeeper James Knoebel.
After a second yellow card to a Liberty player put the Flames down to 10 men, the Tribe strung together three chances over the course of three minutes from the 53rd to 56th minutes. Off of a corner kick, Bustamante put a shot on frame that was turned away by Knoebel. Two minutes later, sophomore
Marcel Berry received a cross from junior
William Eskay, but a Flames defender blocked his shot. The rebound landed at the foot of senior
Reilly Maw, but he launched his follow-up high.
W&M broke through with a goal in the 61st minute. Sophomore
Ryder Bell sent a cross into the box from the right side that found Trott. The Williamsburg native was able to direct into the right corner of the net. His second marker of the season gave the Tribe a 1-0 lead.
Just three minutes later the Tribe doubled its lead. Off of a free kick just outside of the penalty area,
Antonio Bustamante took a direct shot at goal. He placed his shot perfectly in the left upper 90 for his first goal of the season.
With the man advantage, the Green and Gold was able to show its offensive prowess. Aside from the two goals, W&M had an 11-2 advantage in second half shots, and a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks. For the game, the advantage for the Tribe was 12-4 and 6-1 in shots on-goal. Individually, Bustamante and Berry led the team with three shots.
