Last Second Goal Trumps Men's Soccer in Conference Opener

NEWARK, Del. – Delaware's Jamie Martinez scored the game-winning as time expired to defeat the William & Mary men's soccer team 2-1 and end W&M's five-game winning streak. With the decision, the Tribe falls to 5-2, 0-1-0 in Colonial Athletic Association play, while the Blue Hens improve to 6-1, 1-0 in league action.

"I'm so pleased with the character and fight we showed tonight," head coach Chris Norris said. "We had a number of challenges to overcome and the guys just got with it. They focused on each task and stayed in the moment. It was a cruel finish, but Delaware is a very good team. So much good can come from this match as we move past the disappointment."

Delaware controlled the first 45 minutes, firing all seven shots of the period, which also included a 4-0 advantage in shots on-goal. The Blue Hens had a flurry of three shots in two minutes, which were their best chances of the half. Fede Pretio started the rally with his shot being blocked in the 30th minute. Moments later Thomas de Villardi put one target that redshirt junior Phil Breno stopped. The final shot in the rush came from Dani Laguna, which was also saved by Breno.

W&M made the most of its first attempt at shot on the evening putting it away for the first goal of the match. Freshman Reeves Trott sent a pass to senior Reilly Maw just outside of the box setting Maw free. The senior drove down the left side penalty area and fired a shot into left side of the goal. Maw's second goal of the season gave the Tribe a 1-0 lead.

The Blue Hens found the equalizer in the 66th minute. Guillermo Delgado made a great individual play for the goal. He beat a Tribe defender for the ball and then fired a shot by a diving Breno to tie the score at 1-1. It also gave Delgado the Delaware career points mark.

Delaware nearly made it two goals in a row with a chance in the 69th minute. Ben Sampson cleared some space and fired a shot that hit the crossbar and landed out of play.

The Tribe had a pair of chances down the stretch of regulation. The first came in the 69th minute when Trott fired a shot from distance that had to be saved by Morton. The final W&M chance came in the 86th minute, when sophomore Antonio Bustamante fired a shot that was also saved by Morton.

UD had two chances as well in the final few minutes. In the 83rd minute, Carlos Perales fired a shot that Breno stopped, before Sampson missed wide off of a corner kick in the final minute.

The Blue Hens fired the only two shots of the first overtime period. The first came in the 97th minute when Laguna put one on frame, but Breno stopped it. A minute later, John Schroeder missed a chance high.

W&M had the first chance of the second overtime when sophomore Antonio Bustamante fired a shot on target, but Morton made the save.

The Blue Hens' magic came off of a corner kick as time raced down in the match. Carlos Perales sent the corner kick, and the ball rolled around the box. Eventually Martinez fired a shot that crossed the goalline right before the horn sounded.

UD finished the match with an 18-4 advantage in shots and ab 11-3 advantage. Antonio Bustamante led the team with two shots, while Maw and Trott had the other two. Breno made a career-high nine saves in the match.

The College returns to action when they host nationally ranked North Carolina on Tuesday, Sept. 20. The match will be an enhanced broadcast on TribeAthletics.TV and will be available for free and in HD. The match kicks off at 7 p.m.
