WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary men's soccer team fell to No. 9 North Carolina 4-1 on a rain soaked Tuesday night at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field. Junior
William Eskay scored his fourth goal of the season in the 21st minute of the match. With the decision, the Tribe falls to 5-3, while the Tar Heels improve to 6-1.
William & Mary nearly took the lead in just the third minute of the match. Off of a corner kick, the ball bounced to freshman
Tanner Shane who rocketed his shot off of the post. The rebound, bounced back to redshirt senior
Jeff Bombelles, who had his shot blocked, ending the threat. Senior
Reilly Maw also had chance a few minutes later that sailed out of play.
For just the second time this season, the Tribe's opponent notched the game's first goal with Carolina striking in the 13th minute. Cam Lindey sent a pass into the box that found Zach Wright. Wright then fired a cross that found Jeremy Kelly on the left side of the field. Kelly redirected it into the top right of the goal to put the Tar Heels up 1-0.
Just four minutes later UNC added its second goal of the night. Jelani Pieters sent a feed to Wright, who was open at the top of the box. Wright unleashed a shot into the top right corner of the net, making the score 2-0.
The Tribe brought the scoreline back within one with a goal of its own in the 21st minute. Bombelles and Eskay worked a give-and-go to perfection from about 30 yards out. Eskay took two steps and launched his shot into the lower right corner of the goal. His fourth marker of the season, cut the score to 2-1.
North Carolina extended its lead back to two goals in the 56th minute of the match. Alan Winn drove down the middle of the pitch before sending a pass to the top right of the penalty area to a wide-open Tucker Hume. Tucker Hume took a step and fired a shot into the top left of the net. His team-leading fourth goal made it 3-1.
The Tar Heels added the exclamation point off of a corner kick in the 72nd minute. Lindley played ball back to Colton Storm who sent a long ball into the left side of the box. Waiting for it was Walker Hume, who headed the ball into the top of the net.
UNC held a slight 12-10 advantage in shots, including a 7-4 advantage in shots on-goal. Senior
Riley Maw led the Tribe with three shots, while sophomore
Ryder Bell, who returned from injury, fired a pair. Redshirt junior
Phil Breno made four saves in goal in for W&M.
The College returns to Colonial Athletic Association play when they travel to UNCW on Saturday, Sept. 24. Kickoff between the Tribe and the Seahawks is set for 7 p.m.
