WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Sophomore
Ryder Bell and freshman
Reeves Trott tallied goals and the defense made them standup as the William & Mary men's soccer team upended No. 21 Coastal Carolina 2-1 on Monday night at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field. With the win, the Tribe improves to 1-1-0, while the Chanticleers fall to 0-2-0.
For the second straight match, the Tribe jumped on the board first and within the first 10 minutes, striking in the eighth minute. Sophomore
Marcel Berry made a nice individual effort down the left side of the pitch, before dropping a pass off to Bell. Bell made a move to beat a Coastal defender, before firing a shot across the box into the right corner of the net. His first marker of the season gave W&M a 1-0 lead.
During the next five minutes, W&M had four more chances to double its lead, but couldn't find the back of the net. Off a free kick, redshirt senior
Jeff Bombelles sent a shot towards frame, but it was blocked by the wall. A minute later senior
Reilly Maw had a chance that sailed high over the goal, before a 14th minute shot from Berry missed just wide. The final look in the on-rush came off of the foot of Maw, and a diving Alexandre Bouillennec stopped his chance.
Coastal matched the pressure in search of the equalizer for almost the remainder of the first stanza. The first look came in the 28th minute when Wes White fired a shot on-goal that had to be saved by redshirt junior
Phil Breno. Moments later Martin Melchor had a chance blocked. The best chance came in the 31st minute off of a free kick. Miguel Gutierrez took a shot off the kick, and it had to be punched away by a sprawling Breno.
Despite the control during the middle part of the half for Coastal, W&M did have the last chance before halftime. In the 45th minute, sophomore
Antonio Bustamante received a feed from Shane and drove the 18. The sophomore uncorked a chance, but Bouillennec was there for the stop.
After both teams traded a few looks to start the second half, the Green and Gold doubled its lead in the 65th minute.
Antonio Bustamante sent a long pass into the box that found Trott. Trott stepped around a pair of defenders, and put his shot into the lower right corner of the net. The local product's first career goal gave W&M a 2-0 advantage.
Coastal cut the lead in half in the 75th minute. Melchor charged the box and lofted a feed over the goalkeeper. Robin Bjornholm-Jatta made a sliding effort to direct the ball in the net, and cut the deficit to 2-1.
Both teams had a few looks down the stretch, but neither team put any shots on target.
The Chants outshot the Tribe 17-11, but the game was even with five shots on-goal apiece. Breno made four saves, all in the first half, in his first career Tribe win. Berry led the Green and Gold in shots with three.
The Tribe hits the road for the first time in 2016 as they travel to Lynchburg, Va. to take on Liberty on Friday, Sept. 2. W&M returns home and opens a stretch of three consecutive Tuesday home games as they host Longwood on Tuesday, Sept. 6. Both matches are set for 7 p.m.
