WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary men's soccer team rallied back to earn a 3-3 draw in its exhibition opener against Old Dominion on Monday night at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field. Redshirt sophomore
Graham Guidry put away a penalty kick in the 90th minute to level the score for W&M. Sophomores
Antonio Bustamante and
Ryder Bell both scored for the Green and Gold as well.
The early part of the first half was back and forth trying to establish possession with the Tribe firing the first two shots of the game. Senior
Reilly Maw had a shot blocked, before redshirt freshman
Cole Smith had a shot saved on the ensuing corner kick.
W&M found the first goal of the night in the 32nd minute of the match. Bell dished a pass to Smith. Smith sent a cross into the box that found the foot of
Antonio Bustamante. He redirected the ball into the empty net, giving the Tribe the 1-0 lead.
Old Dominion turned up its pressure in the finial 13 minutes off the half, firing all of their six first half shots in the span. The Monarchs earned a penalty kick for an unintentional handball in the box. Sebastian Hauret lined up his PK and scored, tying the game.
The Tribe burst out of the gates with a goal just five minutes into the second half. Redshirt junior
Alfonso Speed, Jr. sent a long ball that found a streaking Bell. Bell raced toward the 18, firing into the right corner of the net to give W&M the 2-1 advantage.
ODU's Niko Klosterhalfen charged the box trying to create a chance in the 58th minute, but was fouled setting up the Monarchs second PK of the night. This time Doni Pollock stepped to the spot and fired home the shot, knotting the score at 2-2.
The Monarchs took their first lead just 10 minutes later with their third goal of the night. Off of a free kick, the ball bounced around in the penalty area until it found the foot of Pollack. Pollack was able to find Stefan Barahona, who shot was deflected by the Tribe keeper, but rolled into the net.
Following the go-ahead ODU goal, Maw had three chances to level the score nearly in a row in the 84th and 85th minutes. The first shot was blocked, but Maw raced to the rebound and turned that one on net, but it was saved by ODU goalkeeper Alex Tiesenhausen. A minute later, Maw again put one on target, but ended with the same result.
Off of a free kick near midfield, Maw was held trying to go for a header drawing the penalty kick. Guidry stepped to the spot and drilled his chance home, tying the score at 3-3 with just 52 seconds left in the match.
Both redshirt senior
Mac Phillips and redshirt junior
Phil Breno played a half in net for the Green and Gold. Each goalie recorded a pair of saves.
