Baseball Three-Game Winning Streak Snapped at Old Dominion

NORFOLK, Va. – Six Old Dominion pitchers limited the Tribe offense to just one run on four hits in a 7-1 setback at Bud Metheny Baseball Complex in Norfolk, Virginia on Wednesday night. With the decision, the Tribe falls to 15-13, while the Monarchs improve to 20-10.

Sophomore Cullen Large led the Tribe with a pair of hits, and scored the team's lone run.

Old Dominion jumped on the board with three runs with two-outs in the bottom of the first inning. Nick Walker led off the inning with a double, moving to third on a groundout. A two-out walk to Connor Myers put runners on the corners, before Turner Bishop cleared the bases with a double down the right field line. After a walk, Jason McMurray singled right back up the middle, giving the Monarchs a 3-0 advantage.

The Monarchs tacked on another run in the bottom of the third inning. Myers led off the frame with a double down the right field line, moving to third on a stolen base. A groundout from Chris Livers gave ODU a 4-0 lead.

ODU took advantage of an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Walker walked moving to second on a stolen base and third on a passed ball. Walker later came around on a wild pitch giving the Monarchs a 5-0 advantage.

W&M broke through in the top of the fifth inning. Large collected the first hit of the game for the Tribe, doubling down the left field line. After moving to third, a sacrifice fly from junior Tim Hoehn cut the lead to 5-1.

For the second consecutive inning, the Monarchs took advantage of an unearned run. Myers reached on a walk, moving to second on a stolen base. Two errors on the same play allowed for Myers to score and push the lead to 6-1.

The Monarchs struck for another run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Lustrino beat out an infield single, but an errant throw allowed him to reach second. A groundout moved him to third, before a sacrifice fly scored him, making the score 7-1.

Sophomore Michael Toner was charged with his second loss of the season for the Tribe. Senior Mitchell Aker pitched three innings allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits. Junior Chase Bailey, senior Andrew White, and freshman Jason Waldman combined to finish the game without allowing an earned run.

Nick Hartman got the win pitching a perfect three innings for ODU. Walker led the Monarchs with two hits with an RBI, while Bishop also drove in two runs for ODU.

The Green and Gold returns to Williamsburg as they open a five-game homestand this weekend at Plumeri Park. The Tribe hosts defending CAA Champion UNCW for a three-game series starting on Friday, April 8 at 6 p.m.
