WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary baseball team found itself on the wrong side of a pitcher's duel falling 2-1 to defending Colonial Athletic Association Champion UNCW on Friday night at Plumeri Park. With the setback, the Tribe falls to 15-14, 4-2 in CAA play, while the Seahawks improve to 17-9, 3-2 in league action.
Junior
Nick Brown turned in his best start of the season for the Green and Gold, but took the hard luck loss. He tossed six innings allowing two runs on five hits. He also picked up a career-high tying 11 punchouts. Sophomore
Robert White was even better behind him. He went the rest of the way allowing just one walk, while striking out four. The 15 combined strikeouts of UNCW hitters was a season-high for the Seahawks.
The Tribe jumped on the board in the bottom of the first inning for the 10th time this season. Junior
Charles Ameer led off the inning with a walk moving to second on a stolen base. With two outs, senior
Charley Gould was hit by a pitch, before sophomore
Cullen Large recorded his 18th two-out RBI of the season, giving W&M a 1-0 lead.
Casey Golden knotted the score with a homer in the top of the sixth inning. Golden led off the frame with a blast over the centerfield wall. The Seahawks continued the rally with walks to Zach Canada and Kennard McDowell setting the table for the top of the lineup. With two outs, Steven Linkous lined a single into left giving UNCW a 2-1 lead.
Offensively five separate Tribe players collected hits, but the College left 12 men on the base paths. Large was credited with the team's only RBI, while Ameer scored the run.
UNCW's Ryan Foster was equally as impressive on the bump for the visitors. He earned his sixth win, tossing seven innings allowing just the first inning run, while scattering five hits, adding six strikeouts. Jarred Gesell tossed a scoreless ninth, fanning the side in his third save of the season. Linkous was the only player in the game to collect multiple hits, and provided the game-winning RBI.
The Green and Gold and Seahawks continue their three-game series tomorrow, Saturday, April 9 at 4 p.m. The set concludes on Sunday, April 10 at 1 p.m.
