NORFOLK, Va. – The William & Mary baseball team dropped a 6-3 decision at in-state rival Norfolk State on Tuesday evening. With the setback, the Tribe falls to 17-19, while the Spartans improve to 17-16.
Sophomore
Cullen Large led the Tribe offense collecting a pair of hits and driving in a run. Senior
Josh Smith doubled and had W&M's other two RBI.
W&M scored the game's first two runs with a pair in the top of second. Juniors
Ryder Miconi and
Charles Ameer sandwiched a pair of walks around an out to set the table. With two outs,
Josh Smith doubled down the left field line, clearing the bases and giving the Tribe a 2-0 advantage.
Norfolk State tied the score without a hit in the bottom of the third inning. Back-to-back walks to Chase Anderson and Ismael Herrera followed by a sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third with an out. A sacrifice fly into foul territory allowed for Anderson to score, before Herrera scored on a passed ball tying the game.
The Tribe retook the lead with a run in the top of the fifth inning. Sophomore
Ryan Hall led off the inning with a walk, moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman
Kyle Wrighte. The next batter, Large, launched a triple into the right centerfield gap, giving W&M the 3-2 lead.
A two out rally gave the Spartans their first lead of the game, and they never looked back. A walk to Herrera followed by Kevin Granger getting hit by pitch set the table. DeNathan Dukes doubled down the left field line, the first NSU hit, clearing the bases and putting the Spartans up 4-3.
NSU tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Roger Hall and Kyle Vaas led of the inning with back-to-back singles, before a wild pitch moved them up 90 feet. A sacrifice fly by Alex Mauricio scored Roger Hall, before a double from Angel Rasario pushed the lead to 6-3.
Freshman
Kinston Carson was charged with his second loss of the season for the Green and Gold. He tossed 4.2 innings allowing four runs (three earned), didn't allow hit, but walked three in the loss.
Mauricio was credited with the win for NSU. He threw four innings of relief allowing one run on one hit. Michael Parmientier pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his third save of the season.
The College continues its road trip with its mid-week road finale as they travel to North Carolina on Wednesday, April 20. First pitch between the Tribe and Tar Heels is set for 6 p.m.
