Baseball Topped by No. 13 North Carolina

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The William & Mary baseball team fell to No. 13 North Carolina 17-2 at Boshamer Stadium on Wednesday night in Chapel Hill. With the setback, the Tribe falls to 17-20, while the Tar Heels improve to 26-12.

North Carolina scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back. Brian Miller, Adam Pate, and Tyler Ramirez walked loading the bases, before Logan Warmoth singled into center field opening the scoring. Back-to-back sacrifice flies from Brandon Riley and Eli Sutherland gave the Tar Heels the early 3-0 advantage.

The Tar Heels added four runs in the home half of the second inning. Zack Gahagan led off the inning with a walk, moving to third on a double from Cody Roberts. Miller followed with a double that cleared the bases. The rally continued as Pate walked and Ramirez singled for the third run. The final run of the inning came in on an infield single by Riley.

UNC added another run in the bottom of the third inning. Tyler Lynn led off the frame with a double. After an error, Roberts singled up the middle, pushing the lead to 8-0.

William & Mary got on the board with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning. Freshman Kyle Wrighte was the Tribe's first base runner when he drew walk, moving to second when sophomore Cullen Large singled up the middle. The next batter, senior Charley Gould singled to right, brining home the first W&M run. Junior Ryder Miconi flew out to left, but it was enough for a sacrifice fly, and cut the deficit to 8-2.

The Tar Heels added five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Lynn led off the inning with a walk, followed by a Gahagan single, and a Wyatt Cross walk, loading the bases. A single from Miller scored the first run, before back-to-back hit by pitches scored two more. Warmoth and Riley followed with back-to-back sac files to complete the scoring.

UNC added four unearned runs as they batted around in the bottom of the seventh inning. Riley, Utah Jones, Gahagan all recorded RBIs in the inning.

Sophomore Robert White was charged with his second loss of the season for the Green and Gold. He tossed one inning allowing three runs on one hit.

Cole Aker earned the win for UNC, going two innings without allowing a run. Miller had a pair of hits, scored four runs, and drove in three to lead the Tar Heel offense. Riley had four RBI as well for UNC.
