CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Playing with 10 men for the final 64 minutes the William & Mary men's soccer team turned in a gutty effort, but couldn't overcome a pair of goals three minutes apart in the first half and a late tally, falling to No. 16 Virginia 3-0 Tuesday night in Charlottesville. With the decision the Tribe falls to 7-6-2, while the Cavaliers improve to 8-2-4.
Virginia opened the scoring with a goal in the 26th minute. Following a foul that resulted in a red card, Edward Opoku lined up his shot from just outside of the 18 and sent a hard low shot inside the left post, giving UVA the early 1-0 lead.
Just three minutes later the Cavaliers doubled their lead with another goal. Jean-Christophe Koffi created some space for himself and rocketed a shot into the top left corner of the net. His first of the season made it 2-0 UVA.
W&M started to create some chances towards the end of the first half. In the 33rd minute sophomore
Ryder Bell turned a shot on frame, but it was saved by Jeff Caldwell. Two minutes later a chance came off of the foot of sophomore
Antonio Bustamante from just outside of the area, but again Caldwell made the stop.
The Tribe pressure continued off of a corner kick that bounced out to freshman
Ricardo Acosta, but he pushed his shot wide. The finial look came in the 44th minute when
Antonio Bustamante found a streaking Bell on the left side of the box, but he missed just wide.
W&M's best look of the night came in the 55th minute. A cross came into the middle of the box that freshman
Reeves Trott was able to get his head on, but he pushed the chance just wide.
The Tribe had a trio of chances in the 59th, 60th, and 61st minute. The first two came on free kicks just outside of the penalty area that
Antonio Bustamante fired into the defensive wall. The final look in the outburst came off of a corner kick that bounced outside the 18 to redshirt junior
Riley Spain, and his chance was saved from Caldwell.
UVA added a late goal in the 84th minute. Raheem Taylor Parks sent a feed that sprung Wesley Wade open the box. Wade put his shot passed a diving Breno, making it 3-0.
The Green and Gold continued to fight and had few chances to break the shutout late in the match. In the 86th minute, Bell fired a shot on frame that had to be saved by Caldwell. Then down the stretch, senior
Reilly Maw missed just wide, while Trott sailed a shot high, and
Antonio Bustamante missed one wide just before the buzzer.
Despite the scoreline and playing with man down the majority of the match, the Tribe outshot Virginia 17-11, including 13-6 advantage in the second half.
Antonio Bustamante and Bell fired a match high five shots in the contest. Breno made three saves in net for W&M.
The Green and Gold conclude its regular season with three straight home matches starting this weekend. W&M will host Colonial Athletic Association foe College of Charleston on Saturday, Oct. 22. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
