WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary men's soccer team scored three goals in a row and hung on late to secure a crucial 3-2 Colonial Athletic Association victory over College of Charleston on Saturday night at Albert-Daly Field. Junior
William Eskay, sophomore
Ryder Bell, and senior
Reilly Maw tallied in the victory. With the win, the Tribe improves to 8-6-2, 2-3-2 in league action, while the Cougars fall to 3-7-3, 1-3-2 in CAA play.
William & Mary controlled the possession for a majority of the first frame and totaled nine shots in the stanza. Five of those were on target, and Charleston goalkeeper Kevin Shields saved them all. Eskay fired the Tribe's first shot on target in the 13th minute, before Maw had a shot stopped in the 17th minute. The Tribe continued its pressure as Bell had a shot on target in the 22nd minute, before sophomore
Antonio Bustamante had the same fate in the 30th minute. The final shot on target in the period came in the 39th minute when senior
Jeff Bombelles had a shot stopped.
W&M netted its first goal just a minute into the second stanza. Eskay chased down a loose ball that led him to a one-versus-one with keeper down the right side of the pitch. The junior planted his shot into the lower left of the net, pushing the Tribe to a 1-0 lead.
The Cougars responded with a pair of shots, including their first on target for the night. In the 58th minute Rittmeyer turned a header on frame off of a free kick, but redshirt junior
Phil Breno was there for his first save.
In the 64th minute, the Tribe double its lead. Maw sent a ball off to Bell, who charged towards the area. The sophomore fired from the left side and rolled his shot into the lower right. His eighth of the season gave W&M a 2-0 advantage.
Not even a minute later, W&M found the back of the net again. This time freshman
Tanner Shane sent a long ball that Maw was able to chase down. Maw uncorked a chance from a harsh angle that hit off the Charleston keeper and into the back of the net.
CofC broke the shutout with a goal in the 68th minute. Paul Burdick raced down the right side of the field, before sending a cross into the box. Waiting on the other end was Rittmeyer, who redirected the cross with a header into the back of the net. His third of the season cut the score to 3-1.
W&M just missed its fourth goal with three chances in a row in the 77th minute.
Antonio Bustamante lined up the first chance, but it was blocked. The rebound rolled to Bell, who put his shot on frame, but it was saved by Trenton Kederer. Again the rebound rolled back to Bell, but this time a Cougar defender stepped in and blocked it out of play.
The Cougars drew within one thanks to a PK in the 77th minute. After an inadvertent handball in the box, Leland Archer buried his shot from the spot to cut the lead to 3-2.
W&M doubled up Charleston 19-8 in shots, including 10-3 in shots on-goal. Bell fired a mathch-high seven shots, while Maw had four shots.
