WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary men's soccer team scored three times in the final 10 minutes as they blanked Michigan 4-0 on Homecoming on Saturday night at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field. Sophomore
Ryder Bell scored twice, while senior
Reilly Maw added a goal and two assists in the victory. With the win, the Tribe improves to 7-6-2, while the Wolverines fall to 2-8-4.
After a back-and-forth start, W&M turned up its attacking pressure during the middle part of the first half. Firing four shots in an eight-minute span. The rally started when junior
William Eskay turned a shot on frame, but it was saved by Braden Horton. A minute later, sophomore
Antonio Bustamante turned a chance toward the cage, but came away with the same result. The final two chances of the outburst came from Eskay, who had a shot saved in the 24th minute, before missing one just wide right because of a deflection.
The Tribe finally broke through with the match's first goal in the 40th minute. Senior
Reilly Maw possessed the ball at the top of the penalty area and sent a pass to the left side of the area. Bell got there and uncorked his shot into the lower right of the net. Bell's sixth goal of the season made 1-0.
Michigan did have three shots in the first half, but none of them were put on target. Jack Hallahan missed high in the fifth minute, before Billy Stevens sailed a shot in the ninth minute. The Wolverines final chance of the half came in the 30th minute when Robby Mertz also missed high.
W&M opened the second period and turned up its attack quickly. In the 47th minute freshman
Reeves Trott missed high. Just a moment later, senior
Jeff Bombelles had his shot blocked. On the ensuing corner kick, freshman
Tanner Shane was able to get his head to the ball, but he clanked it off of the post.
As the half continued, the Tribe also continued to mount more pressure. In the 60th minute, Eskay put another shot on frame, before freshman
Julian Ngoh, who made his first career start did the same thing in the 63rd minute. However, Horton saved both shots.
The Tribe finally found its second goal of the night in the 81st minute. Maw started a two-on-one breakaway with
Antonio Bustamante down middle of the pitch. At the last moment, Maw fed the ball by the goalie, and
Antonio Bustamante scored into the empty net.
After registering assists on the first two goals, Maw joined the scoresheet with a goal of his own just a minute later. From its own penalty area, Bell sent a long ball that sprung Maw on the break all by himself. Maw fired his shot off of the keeper and into the net. His third of the season gave W&M the 3-0 advantage.
Bell capped the night the way he started it with the final marker in the 86th minute.
Antonio Bustamante controlled the ball from just outside the top of the box. He found Bell on the right side of the area. Bell then launched his shot into the left of the net, sealing the victory.
W&M controlled the possession essentially the entire night outshooting Michigan 22-4, including 13-1 advantage in shots on-goal. The Tribe allowed just one Wolverine shot in the second half. Individually, Eskay led the team with six shots.
Redshirt junior goalkeeper
Phil Breno made one save on the night in goal. It was his fifth shutout of the season.
The Green and Gold conclude the road portion of its regular season schedule as they head to in-state rival Virginia on Tuesday, Oct. 18. Kickoff between the Tribe and the Cavaliers is set for 7 p.m.
